I have recently taken delivery on my 2001 3500 Ram with automatic 4:10 rear end 2 wheel drive with all accessories and towing package availabilities.

When I shut down I get "swish" noise or like a big air pressure release from the engine. The Dodge dealer says this is normal but could not explain what it is? Is it from the turbo charger or just extreme compression from the diesel? I currently have 2550 miles on the truck. Could some explain this and do they experience this?

Secondly is black or blue smoke normal in the morning start up? Thanks "Big Ram"

My truck smokes just a little on start up and I have only 1800 miles I'm pretty sure this is normal. As for the sound when you shut it down, mine makes a squeak and I'm pretty sure it is the belt squeal from the plastic tensioner pulley, which I understand almost all the Cummins powered trucks do this. I remember reading a post about a steel replacement pulley from cummins that clears up that squeal. Do a search for that tread. Hope this helps.

BIGRAM, check out "general diesel topics" on this site and click on the "Does your truck smoke at cold start up" thread. I give a pretty detailed reason for the smoke.

One other possibility might be the air conditioner preasure equalizing. Not a real loud noise ,like the belt squeal, just a hissing sound when you walk past the front of your truck. If you think this might be it it's easy to prove, just turn your climate controls to the off position, run the motor for a while then shut it off and listen. If it's gone that's what it is and it's nothing to worry about. #ad

Self installed goodies,
OEM Running boards,Mud flaps&Bed liner, Tinted windows,Jacobs E-Brake,BD Torque Loc. Whimpy stock class 4?? hitch fell off-replaced it with a Super Hitch(1200# tongue,15000# trailer) on the house from DC thanks for the recall!!

Installing-Trailer brake controller.

Next-BD Pressure loc and one of those really cool mag hytec transmission pans.

The noise you hear is the fan belt loosing inertia and slipping for a micro second, when that big engine with all that compression comes to an abrupt halt.
A little smoke on startup, cold or hot is normal. Sam #ad

BIGRAM:
I get a little chirp on shut-down, but only when it's hot outside (80s or higher). I also get a big puff of blue smoke on the first (and only the first) start of the day (even if it's 6:00pm). That happens when the grid heater doesn't cycle (warmer outside temps. ). When the temp. is cooler, the grid heater runs, and I get no smoke.

The whoosh on shutdown is normal. Both mine and my brothers does it. I'm not sure what it is but I suspect its a little engine kickback.

Just a Little BOMBed and liking it a lot. :p

My 94 use to make the squeek and as was mentioned it is the high compession engine shutting down real fast whil everything else wants to keep on going.
The swoosh is probaby the fix that Cimmins did to stop the squeek.

Dewdo in the other Washington

BIGRAM,I have a 99 3500 and it does the same thing sometimes more sometimes less. It is not the fan belt or pully squeek, a definete whooshhhh. I think it probably is either an intake or exhaust vavle that is just opening at time of shutdown and what you hear is the rush of "air". Just my humble opinion.

As far as a litlle smoke on cold start up, normal I think. Good luck with your rig, hope you enjoy!!!!!
