Shut down squeal

I have a 2001 2500 4x4 and the problem I am having is that when I shut off the engine I get a loud "belt squeal. " Now I'm not sure that it is a belt but I sure would like to know what it is so I can take it to the dealer and get it fixed. I've only got 9K on this truck so It'll be covered. I haven't done any mods to the truck to cause something like this and I believe it has been going on since the second month I owned the truck. Until recently it hasn't bothered me but when people ask what that noise is, I don't like that. Anyway, if anyone can tell me what it might be or maybe how to fix it I would appreciate it.

Do it yourself and install a Goodyear Gatorback belt and the noise will be gone. Price of belt is around $23. 00 and the p/n is 4080810. Good Luck.

what is the gatorback belt for? I mean I don't even know what belt it is!

You only have one belt. Its the serpitine belt on your engine making the noise. Its not an uncommen occurance. Its the compression of your engine stopping imediatly, the accessories don't stop as quick, while the belt "slips" making the noise.



If you have the 235hp motor (ETC) you have 16. 3:1 compression ratio, if you have the 245hp motor (ETH) then you have 17:1 compression ratio.



The GoodYear Gatorback belt is just a specific belt many members have used to cure the "squeal". Do a search on it and you will see many posts on the matter.

I like my shutdown chirp, i would feel lost without it. Whenever i shutdown in public places i get lots of "What the hell was that noise?" looks. Just about every ISB i have seen with a stock belt does this.

My under standing is that the Automatics seem more prone this this affect. I have a 6 speed and have never had this (problem) if it is considered one. My buddies truck which is 1 day younger then mine does it all the time. He's got the auto and another friend of ours who's wife has an Automatic does it also. Be interesting to take a poll on who's chirps and who's does not.

I only have the chirp when it is real hot, above 90F.

I speculate that the stick trucks have a much heavier flywheel and inertia keeps the crank spinning just enough longer that the belt doesn't chirp.

Most people live with it. I consider it distinctive and it seems to do no harm. Think of it as a feature! Ya didn't buy this truck 'cuz it's quiet.

The chirp is part of the character of the truck. My 6 speed has chirped ever since I lost the blow by bottle and extended the breather downtube.



My 95 did it also. Has never bothered me.



On another thread someone said the gatorback worked for about 1 month before it started chirping. May want to research it before dropping the $ for a temp fix.



For those that is bothered - has anyone ever tried spray on belt silencer?

Mine is sporadic, but when it happens it just reminds me of the awsome power/compression of the Cummins.



I rarely play my radio anymore... . just love listening to this motor work.

99 auto did it every time. 2001. 5 ETH never done it. I keep waiting for the new truck to do it, I guess that means I miss the sound. I'll buy the heavy flywheel theroy.

My 99 has never done it. The truck had 32,000 when I got it and it now has 68,000. Mine is a 5 speed.

I was thinking that the resistance to movement in the torque convertor would cause the crank to stop sooner. I guess it's a combination of both. Ain't the TDR great!

This is my story and I'm sticking to it...



When this was brought up last year, the consensus was that the motor was stopping NOW and if the silicone in the fan clutch was hot enough to have the fan locked up at the moment that the motor was shut off, it's inertia would would have enough force to slip the fan pulley and create the belt "chirp".



I'd listen to this for 4 months out of the year... until this year that the Gatorback serpentine was installed. No chirp since.

Gatorback Belt

The Gatorback belt is a nice solution to the chirp. Mine has been in for 3 months now and it has not chirped since I replaced it. I don't think it is a temporary fix based on my experience. I'll keep mine.
