Did some more research about shutting down. replaced solenoid and runs fine . seems like the old solenoid tension was greater than the
voltage needed to hold it up. will check out old solenoid to see if crud buildup was the problem.

There has been lots written here about that. In 21 years, 232000 miles, I have replaced the boot once, then a couple of years later, the solenoid failed and needed replacing. Shortly after that, I had to replace the relay that triggers the solenoid.

Just as a reference, mine started acting weird, turn the key and the engine acted like i had lost my prime, but would start normally when the plunger was lifted. I took this as an indication the relay was not producing enough juice to hold up the plunger when the start position was used. changed to a new relay and starts as it should. used for 22yrs and 165K miles. Good to go again.

Mine has a bit over 500K miles on it, it's 22 years old, and it's been without a boot for around 350K miles. I have replaced both the relays once.

When should the solenoid start to work? Key in the on position or start to work in the start position?

One part of the solenoid pulls up when the starter engages and the other part holds up until the key is turned off.
