Shutdown rattle?

I've had my truck for over 3 years now and just in the last couple weeks, I've experienced a noise sometimes when I shut the truck down. It sounds almost like loose rattling metal or a body/suspension part. Any ideas?

Vaman, with the "belt chirp" problem, one has to think the engine dies abruptly. 3+ years on the motor mounts and things loosening up that are connected to the Cummins has to take its toll somewhere. Exhaust comes first to mind. If anything else hits me between the eyes, I will get back to you.

My first thought was the belt chirp thing but it's a metallic sound. It also didn't occur until after I ran in a truck pull so I'm wondering if I stressed something (besides myself).

This happened a long time ago before I knew better. I had a 89 ford diesel. It started rattling when I would shut it off. Back then they had springs in flywheel like clutch discs do and one of those springs cracked causing the rattle. I don't know off hand what Dodge has(at work & no shop manual) but I know what the fords use to be like. Yours is probably something different.

Solid flywheel... and this sounds like it's more towards the front end.

Try holding in on the clutch peddle when shutting down. The flywheel always rocks back and forth when it comes to a stop but with the clutch in it takes everything from the flywheel back out of the picture.



Just a thought, it works well for the Fords (oops dirty word)

Turned out to be the exhaust. It's amazing how it sounded like engine compartment from the cab. Once I got under the truck and started playing, I found a loose hanger towards the REAR of the truck. Go figure... Anyhow, thanks for the replies.
