I'm not real fond of the super duty version, its extra weight can sometimes loosen and shear the rear afc housing bolt, after the horizontal mounting bolt loosens and falls out. Then its usually heli-coil time for the governor housing as the bolt has wallowed out the threads. .
Just my 02. I'm not aware a VW application for a P7100 pump. Some VW's that use the VE rotary pump like the first gen. trucks, have a strikingly similiar shutdown solenoid. The first gen's solenoid has a plunger internally to stop the fuel flow, whereas our P pumps have the external solenoid that attaches to the external pump lever.
The smaller oem version is still available for a bit less than the $289, send me a pm if your friend is interested.
