sag2: I understand the engineering and agree with your point about the change in drive line, etc. but my issue was actually with the noticable shudder. I have driven trucks, Ford, Dodge and Chevy, for a while and I don't recall any shudder issues when driving loaded then unloaded or vice versa (except when there was a u-joint problem). My point was that with my 3500, I have less vertical travel of the bed when I hitch up my fifth wheel than I did with my 2500, and my fifth wheel isn't even at the truck's max. tow rating. I had no shudder in the 2500. That's why I called it a "defect". Even if it's not a defect, and it doesn't matter what you call it, why would my 3500 4x4 dually shudder and not my 2500 4x4 not shudder (or at least I didn't notice any shudder in the 2500)?

Frankly, the shudder doesn't bother me but I don't want to replace u-joints before their time.

When that happened on my 2500 Chevy, it turned out, (after installation of new "U" joints) to be a twist in the differential, just tempory until I got up to about 30 mph or so. When the heavy load went off, things smothed out. I finally took it to a power shop, and they diagnosed it for me.

On my 03 Dodge, it was a pre-curser to the transmission dying on m3.
