Getrag growls bad in 1st 2nd and reverse under load, more than likely a bad bearing. But just recently it's started to slip out of 3rd when I let off the throttle, feels like it doesn't shift into 3rd gear all the way. I'm going to pull the trans to change the bearings. What should I look for as to the 3rd gear problem while the trans is out?

I need to make the getrag last only a few more months until I can get enough time and cash for a nv5600 swap.

When the bearings get out of proper preload, they allow the gears to have improper mesh. This can account for the growl. Read my post on the getrag. You can get all the service you want from it for as long as you want but you must not run it to destruction or you will find the cost more than you can stand.

You may have scuffed the gear on the countershaft and that may be the source of the growl. In any case, you can repair this problem at reasonable cost if you don't run it to destruction.

Jumping out of gear can also be relative to bearing condition. You can examine the condition of the syncro ring and determine if it needs replacement.

When the bearing is sloppy between the input shaft and the out put shaft it will cause jumping out of gear problems. Also usually the front counter shaft bearing goes first. I got my bearing kit from Vally Truck Parts in Grandrapids Mi. It was $150 7 years ago. Maby you can remove a couple of shims from the back cover and add somore preload on the midle bearing to quiet things down.
