Guys,

Big Don here. I have recently noticed that my 6 speed makes some weird noises when in neutral and I let out on the clutch. It kinda makes a growling/knocking noise while the truck is idling. Seems fine while driving and shifts smooth, well as smooth as a six speed can. Any advice/suggestions as to what the problem may be or is this normal.

thanks

Don

noisy 6-speed...

Big Don: The rattling noise you hear is normal. Some call "gear rollover rattle" or "gear rollover noise". You will also notice it while idle/crawling in 1st or 2nd gear. First time I encountered "gear rollover" was in my '90 SHO. Got my attention the first time I heard it, but learned to live with it.

Could also be that when you release the clutch, the gears in the gear box are stationary and then begin to spin with the motor. So what you may be hearing is the acceleration of the main gear cluster in the gear box.

Mine does it also. Common on manuals

My Toyota 4x4 5 speed did it, still runs like new for the friend I sold it to with 180,000+ miles on it. My Dodge 6 speed does it and the other day I heard a big rig do it next to me accelerating from a stop light. I don't worry about it, It's part of the territory. It's a real good indicator for telling you you're lugging the engine/trans imo...
