Other than a loss of power and oil bleeding out the tailpipe, are there any other signs or symptoms of a turbo about to crater? I just got back from a long trip to Albuquerque and I was noticing the turbo was making a markedly louder and lower pitch sound under heavy acceleration than the usual high pitched scream that I hear normally. In addition, at high idle I can faintly hear the turbo which I have not been able to do in the past. I haven't experienced a power loss or seen any oil coming out the tailpipe. I'm wondering if it might just be since I just installed my straight pipe kit and ditched my AFE filter and went back to the stock paper filter element. I am concerned though because not too long ago I discovered the AFE filter had dusted my turbo which no doubt some of you might have seen my post regarding that. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Eric

I would check the axial play on the shaft, a small amount of radial play, as long as the wheel isn't hitting the housing, is ok, but you should not have any axial play.

As far as you noticing more noise, or different noise, check for leaks in both the intake tube and the entire intake system.

I know I have stated the obvious, but if it all checks out, I would be hesitant to borrow trouble.

Ok, I'll check the connections again on the air intake piping. When I had everything off from the AFE filter incident I had double checked to make sure all my clamps were tight and they seemed to be. When you say a bit of "radial" play is ok, I'm assuming you are talking about a up and down or side to side motion right? It's only if I find the front to back motion that's bad news right?

Go back to the AFE, your turbo was fine.

Mine started making a funny slow waver in the tone from the turbo after having injectors installed... that was probably 25k ago. To sound like an idiot, it sounds like woo, wooooo, woo, woo, woooooo, woo... and typically only at light load/throttle. It screams like normal at WOT or load.

I check my turbo out, all the fittings, etc... the only thing I can imagine is possibly the waste gate or a nicked blade? The pressure is fine, and doesn't waver with the tone... so I sorta ruled out the waste gate, not sure how a blade would have gotten nicked.

That's correct!
