I occasionally read about the removal of the silencer ring. I've seen mention of it in nonrelated post and note of it in some member sigs.

Curious... ...

What does is the effect of doing this? Who's done it on their 04. 5 48re?

How to do it and how difficult? What is the down side of doing it?

Thanks

Oh... on edit... where it is!

I dont know what the downsides are but the turbo whine is alot louder, I know that they sell after market turbos with the silencer ring on or removed, so it doenst make sense about downsides, but music. Its really easy to remove, just get two small flathead screwdrivers and carefully remove the ring, you should get it out in about 5 seconds. Just slide one screwdriver between the ring and the silencer and gently twist the screwdriver, you will see the ring come apart then slide the other screwdriver over and keep twisting, the ring will pop out.

It is located on the turbo intake. Pull the fresh air intake tube off the tubo and you will see it. Do a search and you will find a pic of it. It does nothing for performance.

Ahhh... I should have done that when I put the torgue tube and AFE intake on. The whine was enhanced when I put that set up on. How much more whine will I get if I remove thee ring?????

For us old guys who really should have hearing aids, before the ring went missing I could not hear the turbo!. Now I can, and a sweet sound it is.

Okay, now we're talkin'! After I put in the torque tube, Stage 1 and PG7 I was lovin' the the sweetness of hearing the turbo and was wondering how to bring it out out even more.

I just yanked that bad boy in about 2 minutes, bumped the Juice to level 4 and went for screamer run up to Park City. That's the ticket! Oo.

Not a recommended procedure if you are not a fan of hearing your turbo!

I know most everyone will disagree, but I replaced the ring. Turbo seems to spool up faster. Judged only by seat of pants feel, throttle more responsive. Had same results with the 03. Since I couldn't hear the turbo if it sat on my shoulder :{ , what was the point in having the ring out. If someone would put theirs back in maybe this would let me know if I'm imagining this.

Is the increase in noise only inside the cab, or can you hear it better outside the truck as well?

The sound in the cab is great... . not piercing. Outside the cab... . you are announcing your arrival! It's pretty loud but not abnoxious.

I don't notice any change in turbo spooling. Maybe the box has something to do with that.
