Hi All. I went to the Holset website and can't get the instructions to come up regarding removal of the silencer ring from the turbo. I understand it doesn't increase power at all but I love the whine of a turbo. Does removal of the ring make the turbo whine more noticeable? Does anyone have a copy of the instructions? Thanks in advance for the help.

You don't need any instructions. Just take a flat screwdriver or a pair of snap-ring pliers and try to get under it and pry it out. It should pop right out with a little persuasion.

It will make the turbo a little louder.

Another opinion on removal...

Just another thought...

I did the silencer removal deal and yes the whistle is sorta' neat. But, I just recently put mine back in. I prefer to keep my truck stock and I want to hear any and all things that may come up. It is still under the 5/100K warrantee and when taking it back to the dealer for work, it is easier to hear things.

If you do remove the ring, try to be carful not to distort the snap ring in case you do want to return it. I warped mine to the point where it would not seat properly on reinstall. Many thanks to Cowboy Medic who forwarded me his ring and silencer!

So, how loud are we talking here??? I work in a downtown area and hear the UPS trucks running around and you can hear their turbo's whine at idle. Also, I forgot to mention in my first message that I also took the 6" piece of plastic pipe between the two rubber elbows out. Then I took a hacksaw blade and cut the plastic inserts out of the elbow because a Mopar magazine I was reading at the time said this plastic pipe between the air cleaner and turbo was basically a "turbo muffler" and did nothing to enhance airflow. When I cut those pieces out and lay them on top of each other they were about 1" thick so I figure that was taking space better used by additional air. Yeah, I know, that excuse did not fly too well with my wife either. I thought she was literally going to crucify me when she came into the garage and there were intake tube pieces all over the place. I don't usually get too scared of this 105 pound woman but I was at that particular point in time. Anyhow, I put the tube back in and the truck didn't sound any different. Anybody else do this too? Or am I the only idiot... .

I didn't think it made that much of a difference really. As a matter of fact, I was pretty disappointed after reading all the "man this screams like a banshee" stuff. The only thing that I noticed was that I could finally hear the turbo a little in 1st and 2nd gear (had a K&N at the time) and it was some louder when I got on it on the highway.

It's not going to hamper any other engine sounds/noises that you might "hear. " Go ahead and yank it out - there aren't any adverse effects.

I have an '04 and removing didn't really get the noise I was looking for... Yes, you can hear it, really good when the engine is cold, but the K&N is what made the difference. The kid next door heard it over the lawnmower! :--) He actually came over to ask me what was making that whistleing noise! Mine is also very audible out the 5" exhaust - you get her wound up going up a hill with a load and you can rattle the windows on a Pete. Idleing you won't hear anything but just driving down the road it'll sing to you and you don't have to have the window down. The six speed may make a difference too, because you'll hear the turbo every time you let off to shift - not sure an automatic would be as much fun...

my silencer ring disappeared before I even had bank approval to buy it! It will whistle a little more, then the X-tube got replaced by a piece of pipe and more whistle. AFE PG7 drop in= more whistle. And the TAD B1-04 turbo whistles ALOT, I can hear it over my straight piped stacks even @idle, It screams like a banshee @ WOT.

Believe it or not, a lot of people have a difficult time hearing in the higher frequencies the turbo produces. I can hear it and heard a big difference after taking the ring out and gutting the intake tube of the plastic baffle. I also punched a 3-1/2" hole in the bottom of the air cleaner housing with a hole saw. I also noticed the turbo seems to spool a little slower without the ring. With the ring it's a real fast whistle. Without the ring, since it takes a little longer to spool (I think), you notice the whistle more.

My wife can't hear the turbo at all.

I would love to put a different air cleaner on but I don't like the gauze filters. Over all the stock paper filters are the best.

the ring will definately make a difference, the tube a tad more, hole in the airbox-slightly, spoolup will be slightly slower and more noticeable in an automatic. no mileage or power gain or loss.

I've said this before but I'll say it again - I'm fairly certain that those of you who think that the turbo is spooling slower just aren't used to hearing the turbo earlier in the RPM range. It will be slower in the beginning because of lag. You're hearing more turbo whistle because the silencer ring is gone and you're hearing the lag of the turbo now. Normally you wouldn't be able to hear that.

Thanks for all the responses and sharing your opinions! The ring is coming out. I agree with Heavy Hauler that we're hearing the turbo over an extended range of spin-up and that would make it seem slower. I can't see how the silencer would slow spin-up since the exhaust is driving the turbo. I am glad to hear I wasn't the only one to gut the "X" tube!!! DSMock, I hear you on the Six-Speed. I've heard a couple of Rams running around downtown with the stick and the turbo whine was music to ears! I don't know if the rings were removed on them or not but the whine through the shifts sounded nice.

I removed mine and added the AFE intake and tube. Now I'm thinking about returning everything to the quiet stock condition. I also want to change out my Banks muffler.

i took some 4 inch pvc and 2 4 inch adapters from pvc and glued together to make about 8 inches long cost about 9 dollars and you have your own silencer elimnator can hear a little whistle but not much

I removed the silencer ring and installed an AFE, ProGuard-7 air intake system. You could definately hear the turbo. Then I bought the AFE metal Torque Tube! What a difference!!! It now sounds like the air intake on an F-16 while it's taking off down the runway.

I believe the plastic ductwork between the filter and the turbo soaks up a lot of the sound waves. The metal seems to amplify it, A LOT!

Mine is loud enough that a buddy of mine got a headache after a day trip in my truck. He thought I was nuts to do that to a perfectly good truck. He, also, drives a Duramax and really likes the quietness of it.

It's all a matter of personal preference.

Been there done with my 99 . Its fun for a while, did a 12hr drive last year it drove me nuts . Ring back in a hurry.

My$. 02.

I took it out first thing after I finished taking off the badges.

While I had the intake tubing off I took all the baffles out and there was some more plastic vanes in the bottom elbow which I also took out. Then I drilled a bunch of 1" holes in the bottom and front of the airbox. None of which I needed to do since I have an AFE coming but I wanted to see what that would do to the sound. I think it sounds good, looking forward to what it is going to sound like with the AFE.

I was hoping for more of the turbo sound but instead only got a high pitched whistle that was really annoying.

High pitched whistle? Not to be smart but that is "turbo sound". I don't know what other sound you might be referring to.

Well guys... It's out and I love it. I like to hear it coming on and this morning on the way to work I listened to the radio at the volume I normally do and it covered the turbo whine so all is good in Bismarck! I really think I am done playing because my bride caught me again with all the intake tubes out of the truck. She was not the least bit impressed. You'd think after 18 years I'd have learned by now.

I have had the entire AFE system w/ the metal torque tube, but the silencer ring is still in place. IMO it's pretty loud.

Just for fun I ordered a Cool Blue Hose from Kyle, and installed it instead of the AFE TT.

Some differences:

The AFE TT creates a resonance you can hear when the wastegate opens, sounds like the turbo is "wheezing. " Also, some vibration would occasionally transfer to the AFE airbox and rattle at certain rpm. But, the turbo sounds from the AFE TT are great! I especially like to hear the turbo winding down when coming to an idle. Sounds like a jet engine shutting down.

The Cool Blue Hose lets you hear the whistle, but not much of the "wheeze. "

You also miss out on the spool-down of the turbo. However, it does sound great when on the throttle. I'm thinking the silicone hose plus a missing silencer ring would be the right ticket for me. No rattles are transferred to the airbox, either.
