Remove the black hose off the front of the turbo. You will see the turbines. The silencer ring looks like half of a funnel that had the narrow part cut off sitting in front of the finns. There is a retainer ring that I pried out carefully with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers. FYI I don't think it makes that much of a difference. Let us know what you think.

I took mine off and I thought the whistle was definately more apparent. I don't regret removing it. I want to hear that baby scream.

I went with the cool blue hose and took the ring out. I love the mild whistle. My seat-of-the-pants-o-meter tells me it didn't do much but it is less obstruction.

Mine whistles like mad with the PSM mods and DPP cool hose. I love it. Was even louder before I took the K&N intake off and put the factory box back in. The 04. 5's have a different turbo than the 03-04's. I think it is a little louder. My friend has an 03 and his doesn't seem to whistle as much.

Take off that ring and let it sing but don't stop there, get a cool hose from dpp . My 03 sings like a banshee !:-laf

Took mine off couple years ago and it also sings, not near enough, but it did make a difference. Go for it!

What is a cool hose? Part of your cold air system? Would you be kind enough to provide a link to this cool hose? I wasn't able to find it.

Thanks-Casey

I made a PSM style cold air intake on my factory box today, and figured while I was there I'll pull the silencer ring and see what kind of difference it makes. Well there is a noticeable difference with it removed, however it's not huge. I imagine it will get more noticeable when I add a cool hose.

Any of you cool hose guys running the TAG III? Does it make any difference or is it purely gimmick?

After further review,my Volant system came with the upgraded hoses. Not sure if a cool hose would make any more difference.

When I installed my exhaust system,it made a difference in the noise my turbo makes out the tail pipe as well. I wish the Cummins made the kind of noise a power stroke does. (Turbo noise)

A buddy of mine had a nice looking ford powerchoke with a 5inch pipe and he drilled a bunch of small holes around his airbox , so he said. His turbo sounded like a jumbo jet all the time . Way too much noise but he had a 7. 3 so at least it was reliable most of the time... . then he went to the dark side and got a cummins may the force be with him ! also that cool hose has soft rounded corners which help the air flow even greater ( fyi )

I'm not running a TAG. Think I read somewhere in an air intake study that it didn't make a difference on the dyno or in mileage testing so I decided not to get one. Might be working for other people though.

I read the same study or one like it. The way I looked at things, more air in,more air out = more power. I did notice a difference in power with my little 250 horse engine with the Volant system w/Ram air and the turbo back exhaust system. Plus it does sound better with a cold air kit.

I started doing that from my first VW diesel Rabbit pickup back in the early 80's,and have done the same with the rest of the 4 or 5 other diesels including the crappy 5. 7 GM diesel in our farm truck. But... ... to each their own,its only my 2 cents.

I removed my silencer ring yesterday after reading this post. I tried the screwdriver technique. Then I used a pick. Pick broke. I ended up (by accident) grabbing the inside edge of the silencer itself. The silencer ring and the snap ring all came out with barely any force. Maybe mine was not in there very well. I noticed a definite increase in the turbo whistle and I like it. Weird thing though, I noticed my EGT's go up about 200 degrees initially. Temp settled down after about 20 minutes worth of driving. That was on the first drive after removal. EGT's have not been abnormal since then.

Would you happen to have the part number for your ram air, and is the filter the powercore? Thanks.
