I have noticed a Statement regaurding the removal of the Silencer Ring on our trucks.

From what I've read , that seems to increase the boost by some amount, and raise the level of that beloved turbo whine.

Could someone point out exactly where this device is located and what the procedure for removing it is??

Pro's. . Cons on the concept????

Thanks
Larry

It's just a cheap, stamped metal ring, and if you pull off the rubber intake hose of the front or intake end of the turbo, you will see in just ahead of the blades. You will see a large snap ring in a groove in front of it. Just remove the snap ring, and pull the little metal ring out. It doesn't increase boost, but it does look like it covers up about 25% of the area in front of the inlet... ... . DDG

I noticed a 1psi increase in boost at maximum throttle. 24psi from 23psi. I don't beleave that would translate to more power. More fuel equals more power. It does seem to spool up smoother and it doesn't seem to have as much turbo lag. Whether it actually does or not, I don't know. but it makes me happy.

Is it possible that the reducer behind the snap ring is there for a purpose other than noise reduction? Intake and exhaust designs are very esoteric sciences and given a lot of thought and engineering. Sometimes bigger isn't always better. the venturi effect created by going from a large volume area to a smaller one speeds the flow of air up considerably. This may help the scavenging effect of the incoming air. With the engine as inherently noisy as it is already what difference could a little turbo whine make? I personally think that the aluminum "restrictor" is there for air flow purposes only and if Cummins could have left it out and been able to advertise additional horsepower and torque without the expense of the part and the snapring and the machining, it would have so. I may be wrong but- who knows? Sam

Hey Porky,
You're absolutely right in all of your thoughts on the noise reduction plate. However, another member and I asked the folks at Holset and Cummins. The plate is there for noise reduction and serves no other purpose. It's hard to imagine, but alot of owners complained about the turbo whistle.

For what it's worth, the ISB 5. 9 isn't lacking for power. It's available in other applications with 275hp and 660 lb/ft of torque. It's suplied to Dodge with power output specific to the driveline's capabilities. Fraud and Dodge are both stretching the limits of the driveline already for the sake of competitive marketability. Both the Cummins ISB5. 9 and the Powerstroke are detuned versions.

I removed the silencer ring from my 94 Dodge. All that its covering is an empty cavity in the turbo housing. ??????

Yep, that's it. I'd like to call dc and see what the replacement cost is!

Should have seen the face of the Cummins northwest branch manager when i asked him about the silencer ring! This occured at the event recently held in Kellogg ID. I even showed him the groove where the retaining ring fit as we stood over a cutaway 99 isb engine. I agree with Porky about the device having some value as a transition to a smaller size. With it out you can see those large slots exposed and a large void around the actual inlet of the turbo, it surely cannot improve performance, but I also enjoy the sound of the turbo as I am burning the rear tires(around the hairpin corners)going up a 28% grade @ 9,600 ft. elevation, oh yeah.

Well after 3 and a half minutes of hard grueling work I got the hose off the ring out and the hose back on. My ET's are down by half the fuel mileage is almost doubled and my exhaust temp is just above ambient tempature. Really it just makes alittle more noise and we all know noise is good!! Pete

On another Diesel forum there was a post from a guy who worked at Cummins. He stated that the silencer ring was added at the request of DC and it's only purpose is to silence the turbo.
