Where (exactly) is the silencer ring for the turbo and how do i remove it????? Will it increase air flow to combustion or up the MPG???

If you disconnect the inlet hose from the turbo you will see it in there. There is a snap ring holding it in, it's just a little flimsy piece of tin. It doesn't affect anything either way, it just makes the turbo whine like the big trucks do. It's one of those things that, after it's done, everyone seems to really like it or really hate it.

Starting from the top of airbox, follow the large (like 4in. diam. ) air inlet tube down to the front of the turbo. Loosen the hose clamp holding this tube to the turbo and pull off the inlet tube - at this point you can unclip the airbox lid and set these 2 parts out of the way. Looking into the front of the turbo, you will see the impeller blades and the actual inlet to the turbo recessed and of smaller diameter. The silencer ring sits inside the larger inlet fitting and is bevelled inward, providing a smooth transition for air going into the turbo. Mine was zinc-gold in color. The ring is held in place by a snap ring sitting in a groove cut in the inlet fitting (the larger-dia fitting). I've read some posts where people were able to use a pick or jewelers screwdriver to get under the end of the snap ring and start end of the ring on its way out. This did not work for me so I took a 1/16 bit and drilled a hole partially thru the snap ring near one end & used snap ring pliers. If you go this route be extremely carful not to mar the inlet of the turbo with the bit & take EXTRA care to clean out metal shavings. Either way the snap ring is a PITA to get out...

The only effect of removing the ring is the turbo is louder - no MPG or power gain. I removed mine just for kicks - sometimes don't notice, but sometimes like the sound. If you do much highway time the little extra noise will drive you nuts (imagine 500 miles with a dentist drill stuck next to your ear). Good luck... .
