I see alot of prople sayin that, they have removed their turbo silencer ring. 1st off I would like to know why?, 2nd how. I think I would like to if it sounds like a good idea, but how do you remave it and where exactly is it?

The silencer ring is located in the turbo on the compressor inlet. Take off the hose going from the airbox to the turbo. You will see a ring inside the inlet held in place by a snap ring. Carefully pry the snap ring out using retaining ring pliers or a small flat blade screwdriver and the silencer ring will come out. The only purpose of this is to keep the turbo "whine" to a minimum. There is no performance increase by removing it - it just makes your turbo "whistle" a little more like the big rigs. Depends on your taste - some people, like me, like the sound. It can be re-installed if you don't like the sound. Hope this helps!

Removed the ring from my turbo this weekend ( 2001 QC, 3500, 4 X 4, Auto ) and I really cannot tell the difference. I notice a slight whine at highway speeds but not much more.

It was very easy to remove, but I'm disappointed in the lack of the "big rig" sound.

Anyone else out there on TDR have this type of result? Why would it vary from truck to truck? Do I need to have my hearing checked? #ad

In stock form, you won't hear a huge difference - mainly what you are describing. But if you add a K&N filter and turn up the boost with say the addition of an EZ w/ boost elbow, you will definately hear it - if not, drop by your local Belltone dealer!

Silver, I had mine out and noticed more turbo whine in the entire range, but was most noticeable around 2-3 PSI.

My '97 was a 5 spd. and with no ring it had that big rig sound when shifting. my 2001. 5 is an auto, I tried it without the ring and did not like the constant whine. so I put back in.

Thamks for everbodies help, after reading your post , my silencer ring fell off, about 6:15 this morning, and I noticed my muffler and resinator look as if they might fall off very soon, very.

I'm in the exact same boat, wanting to hear my turbo sing, and only maybe hearing a very slight whine/ring... and then hardly over the sound of the engine anyway. IF the sound is very high frequency, say 15000 hz, maybe I can't hear it.

EMD is right. A good free flowing air filter will make it louder. Loose the OE air box and get a K&N RE-0880 for the full effect.

You can hear mine whining/whistling a block away. #ad

hey guys,if you really want to hear whine, whistle, and the air that this turbo can develop you gotta install a phychotty box and that k&n re0880 filter wow the tunes that come right thru the firewall,it truely does sound like the big boys.

good luck,jdmjoe

hey bob, glad you read my thread,I'm going to take silencer ring out again to check out tunes, also ready for my 4'' stacks,so your an engineer huh, what do you think about s/s as apposed to aluminized steel? i'm looking for gray color so no maintinace,or alum/steel and powder coat?? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks, jdmjoe

joe, i am an electronics engineer but i do have basic knowledge of metalurgy and i would take SS over aluminum but it will cost much more than aluminum i am thinking of going to 4 inch myself and i have removed the ring and i can now hear a faint whistle if i press hard on the pedal then engine noise blankets it but if i be gente then i can hear it , wish it was louder . hope that air filter will make a diffrence.
bob

the K&N 0880 will make a diff, but I'm not to sure, IMHO, that going to the psychotty from the K&N makes that big of diff--try the K&N first and then see if you can ride in someone's truck who's got a psychotty to compare--there are other claims of cooler EGT's if ya use the psychotty which may benefit ya too----chris

I agree with this. I removed the silencer ring first, ran it with the stock air box, could hear it but only sligtly better, added the Pschotty air intake. Wow, talk about a whistle! It was great for about fifteen minutes, think it would have driven me nuts after a while. The HX-40 (which has no provision for a silencer ring) with the Psychotty is just perfect, sounds like a muted jet engine spooling up - I love it #ad

chris, excise my ignorance can you please tell me about the psychoty, is it an air filter or some sort of air filter set up?
thanks
