Can someone explain the advantage to removing the silencer ring? Also would removing the cat. convert. and muffler lower EGT's? Thanks for your knowledge!

1997 12v club cab 4x4-plate, 4" turbo back, 370's, quick turbo kit, AFE, trans lock up, guages, 16*, tabbed pin, 135,000 miles, love it every time I drve it.

With removing the ring, you gain more turbo whistle. Nothing more, or less.

I went from the rusted out stock exhaust to a straight thru (no muffler) 5" exhaust system. Only lowered the peak EGTs by 50* (pre-turbo). If you have a restrictive muffler or plugged cat, the gains might me a bit higher. Removing the stock junk reduce turbo lag.

I put on an AFE filter. When I removed the stock air box and hoses did I remove the silencer ring? If I didnt, where is it?

The silencer ring is on the turbo. Remove the hose from the front of the turbo and you'll see a snap ring that holds a metal 'cone' in front of the turbo blades. That metal 'cone' is the silencer ring. You need a really small flat blade screw driver to pop the retaining ring out of the groove/turbo and then remove the silencer ring. Re-install the hose and your done...

When you say the front of the turbo, do you mean the front in refrence to the front of the truck? Say if I where looking at the engine from the front?

taking of the silencer that goes over the ring of the turbo will just give you more whistle. it does not increases hp or tq at all.

and yes taking off the cat. converter would lower egt's not sure by how much but prob. not by alot.

Thanks you guys. I'm going to take out the ring and see the difference in sound, or should I say hear the difference.

Good picture!!! Now I get it!!
