silencer ring?

Warm up with Jacobs Brake on

Let's put this rumor to rest

take the intake off to the turbo. you'll see a snap ring right before the turbo blades-take the snap ring out and the silencer ring will fall out... then close it back up. if you want ear piercing turbo... get a k&n (try the truck without the airbox hooked up for a *quick* run down the road-that's what it sounds like).

Do a search on this. There's a gazillion posts about it. It is in the turbo inlet, remove hose, use small flathead to pop out retaining clip and take it out. Turbo whine is louder, too loud for some that tow.

I put mine back in once. Didn't like it.

Removing the SR helps the turbo sound (note: no one has reported an +/- change in RWHP) but not quite as much as a BHAF--or one of those expensive types. Taking the airbox out is good.

mine will not budge

Tried to take my SR out today, but retaining ring separation was at top of turbo. could not see a thing. I think I read another post on searching this topic that stated if the ring retainer clip is in this position that removing the turbo is about the only way to remove the clip.

Hope I get time to do this soon

Holy BOZO! how'd that happen?

Another thing about the actual removal process is to remember that, while the retainer is hardened steel, the housing is soft aluminum. Careful as you may be, there will be some shards of aluminum to clean up.

I recommend grinding the sharp edges off the retainer in the case of re-installation as well as cutting a notch in the end of it for easier removal next time.

With the retainer up top, you might try a wee tad of lubricant in the groove and see if it'll rotate around to a proper position.

OR just take it out when you remove the turbo to drill and tap the manifold for your PYRO gauge thermocouple. That's the best idea!Oo.

Got it

You can get out ring retainer even if it's on top. I made o tool out of a slim screwdriver by hollow grinding it 90 degrees to the flat. Like I said before ,I couldn't see the ring retainer because the blasted thing had the split on top of the turbo. I got lucky and the 60 degree point fit the profile of the retaining ring. I tapped it lightlywith a hammer and was able to feel it lift. Inserted a second thin blade screwdriver and she came right out.

MY FIRST MOD ! Does this mean I'm catching BOMBing fever?

I don't know, let's see--five days to get the SR out--how long to change the injectors?:-laf :-laf

Yeah it's a slippery slope, slick with #2 and Rotella.

My first fueling enhancement should be in the mail tomorrow. Oo.

Wade you realize this means 1 of 2 things when you get that fueling enhancement installed:

1) Drive over here to give me a ride in it!;)

or

2) You let me know when (and where) to drive over and give me a ride!

Yeah, but I can control it. I mean I'm not addicted, 'cause I can quit at any time--if I wanted to.

:-laf @ Wade!

does removing the silencer ring affect the warranty and has it been noted to change performance or future maintainance (could it cause futher damage) or is it there just for the silencing purpose.

It's just there for sound control, I doubt anyone would ever notice it's gone as far as warranty. One problem folks have encountered who like me don't particularly like continuous high pitched noise is after reinstalling the ring having it and the retainer fall out putting the turbo blades in jeopardy. At least be very certain the retainer is back in it's groove well, some even suggest replacing the retainer with a new one. Best bet is to leave the silencer ring in place unless you like high pitched noise. I can hear my turbo just fine with the ring in. Some folks like the noise with a stock filter but once they change to a free flowing filter (highly recommended) want the ring back in due to increased noise.

Thanks for the info I will probably hold off for a bit untill I get more comfortable with my truck:)

thanks again from the BWT
