What is the silencer ring? I am guessing that it somehow lowers the amount of turbo whine you can hear. If that is the case mine will have to be removed. How do you get it off and can you screw anything up taking it off? I love the sound of a turbo!

Yes it will make your turbo a little louder. And it is pretty easy to take it out. When you take the hose off you will see a snap ring and the silincer ring is being held in by it. I used two screwdrivers and pry up on the snap ring and use the other screwdriver as a lever and pop it right out. BE CAREFULL AND NOT TOUCH THOSE TURBO FINS!!!!!! They look costly.

Took my silencer ring out today and drove it around for about an hour. Sounded great. Felt like it lost some of the bottom end snap so I put it back in and drove it around. Felt like it ran better with it in, especially below 1600rpm. Any opinions on this?

I agree with you, I also removed mine and reinstalled it. I have heard alot said it does not do anything, but I still believe it helps funnel the air into the turbo. The reason there is more noise without it is that there is more turbulance in the inlet. More turbulance=less efficiency.
My 2 1/2 cents.

Yes. The ring appears to smooth out the entry to the turbo inlet. This should improve air flow at the point of entry to the turbo. Especially at low engine RPM when the turbo is not moving much air.

These photos are not my work. Copied from a fellow TDR member that helped me out when I asked the same question.

Thanks

I have a 2001 HO with the six speed. I took mine out, drove my truck around, and threw it in the trash... . no difference in performance at all... . and I do love the sound.
