 I have been talking to many people lately about removing the silencer ring in their turbos. Granted it makes them sound "better" at low RPM, but are they defeating the real purpose. ALL SOUND is created by vibrations. Is the silencer ring a dampening device to reduce harmful vibrations? If so can removing it cause bigger headaches than those sustained by passengers. Any engineers out there that have considered this or can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt there is no harm caused by removal of the silencer ring?

Thanks.

If it was needed for unit integrity then why wouldn't they have cast the ring into the design and made it part of the housing? I think the millions of silencer ring-free miles is far better proof of no harm than any engineer's studied opinion.

Removing it will give one a migrane headache; I had an 850 mile round trip over easter to prove that. But man, it is soooo worth it!

I am a tool and die maker and while I don't know much about turbos I do know that many times a casting as solid will not have the dampening effect that an added device will provide. For example many rifles have a barrel band holding the stock to the barrel, or in a lever gun the stock to the magazine and the barrel. Remove the band and accuracy goes all to heck even though the gun stays together.

The silencer was developed and put in the turbo at Chrysler's request to calm down turbo noise. They said customer's had complained about the turbo whistle when comparing it to gas engines. Take 'em out and let em whistle or not----makes no difference in performance or air quality.

Dampening, I guess not.

Thanks. No difference in performance, what about longevity?
