silencer rings

I'm sure this has been asked before, but surfing on a palm pilot makes archive searches hard...

what tools have y'all used to get the silencer ring off a 3g turbo? I tried w\snapring pliers to no avail--no holes to clip into.

also--how do i clear the resulting engine codes from failing to plug in the MAF sensor on the air cleaner (yes, i am a bonehead!)

A pair of flat blade screwdrivers and the ability to stand on your head ought to do the trick. I even managed to do it from my feet but it would have been easier upside down.

i used two very small flat head screwdrivers and a mirror.

Two flat blade screwdrivers will do the trick, but size does matter I found:-laf I used one medium to small size an one good (no cheapy's) pocket size flat blade. Work the medium or small flat blade gently were the two ends of the ring meet an the other pocket size flat blade to gently work it out around. Took me about 15 to 20 minutes to do every thing, an be careful not to slip an jab the fins. Good Luck

I'm lazy had my son do it! He's a helicopter mech. With the right tools took him 5 minutes. Snap-on picks work great. Also removed the baffeling in the stock intake tube, sounds great now!!

I just used a slightly modified screwdriver and it came out quick. I also recommend taking out the baffles in the intake tube---great sound.

I like snap on tools but craftsman makes good, long lasting picks and you don't have to mortgage your home to buy them.

I looked at mine tonight and found a few interesting things.



1. The cone or ring plate held by the snap ring that is near the turbo seems to be more of a velocity funnel-stack, rather than a silencer ring. I opted to leave mine alone. I've worked on enough flow benches to see that this baffle is more of an air straightner, and not a device to silence the turbo. The turbo OD is less than the opening of this plate, and removing it looks like you will introduce turbulence near the entry funnel of the blades.

2. The air tube that Hoot and others show cutting the lips off at each end appears not to be required. The hoses at each end neck down to about 3. 5 inches internal, so the removal of the lips is for naught. I think the adding of a 3. 5 to 3. 625 ID tube within the air tube assembly is probably even better to reduce the air tumbling inside the 5-inch air tube.

Uh... yea. That turbulance is what makes the noise we all love so much

I've tried my ring in and out, I really feel like the truck is a little more snappy with it in, it even seems like I get a little more boost, plus, I have the AFE PG7 with torque tube and with the ring out the whistle gets a little annoying to me but I can see where some folks might like it. I do know the AFE set up really amplifies the turb noise.

Is anyone running the AFE stock replacement filter and the Moore Powder Coating Eliminator pipe from Geno's? That's the setup I was thinking of going with. Any reports on the whistle or induction noise with that? I think I will try it with the silencer ring first and see how I like it. Only 3000 miles on my stock flter and the prefilter is black and the filter-minder is almost out of the green!
