My passengers side door speaker and the small speaker on the door post forward of the R/H door mostly are silent. Did hear them cut in once, otherwise nothing. The other four speakers work fine.

Are these two speakers on the same circuit, maybe a plug almost disconnected, or should I be looking for a wire through a bulkhead, chaffed?

Thanks.

The speaker in the pillar is a tweeter and is connected to the door speaker on the same side. There are connectors that could work lose though this is unlikely. If you have the lower grade factory system than you may have blown that channel. If it is the Infinity system than you could have blown either the channel in the deck, (unlikely) or the channel on the amp that feeds the speaker. Start with checking all connections and go from there. Good luck. :)

Ian,

You didn't specify whether you ase stock or after-market system. Assuming you're stock, your speakers connect through plugs in the doors and plugs in the connection to the radio. My opinion is the radio is easier to pull than the door panels.

#1 Check your balance and front-to-rear fade to verify your controls aren't faulty. Listen for the crackle in the speakers as you adjust the balance and fade. Maybe that's the problem itself. Next, to pull the radio and check for loose connections in the rear, remove the instrument bezel by pulling it loose from the dash. You'll have to drop the auto shifter to neutral (if equiped) and the tilt wheel down to do so. Next unscrew the two or three hex bolts holding in the stereo and carefully slide it out. If you have the ignition still on and the radio switched on with a little volume, you may be able to detect the loose connection during the radio removal. Check all your connections and hopefully this is it. If one of your buds had a dodge truck, maybe he too will remove his stock radio for you to substitute to verify your unit is go/nogo. Your radio amp for that side may be blown. If that's not the problem, move to the door panel but don't put the radio back in just yet.

#2 Remove all the philips screws holding the door panel on. Carefully work the door panel off the door being careful to disconnect the doorlock and window switch if equiped. The connector should pop off with some gentle persuasion. If you have manual windows and door locks, the window handle probably has some sort of clip securing it to the window crank arm. A small straight screwdriver will usuall pop them out. Be careful as you do this so you don't break the clip or fling it to oblivian. Look over the speaker connection behind the doorframe. Perhaps the window mechanism loosened or disconnected the plug. Hope it's that simple. If that doesn't seem to be the problem, then you have access to read continuity of the speaker to/from the radio. I don't have the 2000 nor factory tweeters so maybe someone who does and has a factory manual could assist with the plug and pin number(s) for the speakers. Reading continuity will verify you're connections are intact or indicate there is a short to ground. Read continuity from connector in the door the radio and from each pin to ground. I don't think it would be a door connector problem as the tweeter wires run through the door (I don't think). The A-Pillar cover should pop off with a carefull tug so you can check that connection and continuity.

Since both the door and tweeter speakers aren't working, chances are a pin has disconnected at the radio and you'll see it right away when you remove the radio.

Hope this helps. This is way simplified and intended to put us both on the same page. I know the ins and outs of 2nd gen Dodge stereo systems since I've installed a few custom systems.

Thanks

Many many thanks for the quick replies Chipstien and BF, much appreciated, this will be my weekend project.

The audio system in my truck is stock.

Thanks again.

Same problem here... left front door speaker out-A-pillar tweeter works on that side. Infinity system. I'll be watching for the results of your quest for tunes! Bob

Passenger speaker out on my 99 also. In my case the speaker is bad. Checking continuity will tell the tale. If you have a diagram and know which wires are which it may be a good idea to check continuity from the back of the stereo in the dash. May save you from pulling the door panel. (at least if you have the proper OHM reading, compare ohm readings to the known "good" speakers). Anyway the door panel is a b it of a pain and all my "clips" stayed in the door and are a pain to pry out. Am looking for replacement clips and an OEM speaker now. Anyone know a good source for either?

Thanks

Got my clips at Parts Plus- a chain in Texas - don't know if they are nationwide or not. They come 5 to a bag for $2. 33. May just got to a stereo shop and let them check it - if bad - get a new unit or at least some hot speakers. Thanks for the reply - Bob

Re silent apeakers.

Many thanks to all that offered trouble shooting advice.

I was going to get at the trouble shooting this morning, had quite a lot of rain and as the truck sits outside, decided to call it off for a while.

Out driving this afternoon, discouvered that the tweaker speaker is in fact working, and after returning home, found that the passenger's door speaker also was operational, although it was not while driving. Suspect a loose connection in the door or maybe a broken wire in the boot by the door hinge.

So, how do you fix something that is working?

The sound system I have is the one shown on Page 97 of the 2000 operators handbook with tape, single CD player, along with volume and radio tuner controls under the steering wheel.

Thanks again.

Inoperative Passenger Door Speaker

Ian,

I'm not sure what the answer is myself. I am experiencing the same problem on my '99 2500, with Infinity sound system. It has been going on for some time. I'm not too happy with that, given what it cost as an option. I'm wondering if there is anything systemic to the this system. There were some service bulletins I read about with problems related to the speakers not working, but nothing defined "exactly" the way we're experiencing it. I will continue to monitor your posting to see if someone offers a definitive answer.

Thanks,

Rich

My pass door speaker was also inop when I bought my truck last summer (Infinity Sytem). There was a TSB on this problem but dodgeram.org does not list any details. When I saw the cost of a replacement speaker my chin hit the floor :--) , then I decided to go to wally world and buy a good pair of replacements for 50% the cost of 1 infinity. Now I have a spare in case the other one goes south.

Are you by chance listening to country-western music? If you are, the problem has nothing to do with something broken. It is a proven fact that country-western will screw up the best made audio equipment.

Adjust the preset stations to rock or pop, and your stereo will be fine.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed static coming in over my speakers while listening to talk radio driving down a gravel road. When I got home I hit the door panels & noticed the noise again on both speakers when I jarred the passengers side. I figured I had a loose connection in the passengers side door so I removed the panel to find it. Everything looked fine so I removed the harness in the door. What I did fing on close inspection was a little corrosion on the pins in the gangplugs that are at the cab end of the harness. I cleaned them up and added dielectric grease to the gang plug & the problem was fixed. I also removed the gangplug on the drivers side of the cab & did the same for preventative maintenence. Just a note. It did blown an amp fuse when I first started on it. I was wiggleing the harnsess between the door & the cab on the passengers side when it did it. That's another reason why I pulled the panel so I could check the wiring under the bellows between the cab & the door. They were fine so I guess the poor connection caused it somehow. I guess the bottom line of what I'm saying is check the gangplug first before going through the trouble of pulling the panel. Mine was a little tough to get off.

Sounds as if "stownsend" has limited cultural exposure to the finer elements of life... my stereo does play both kinds of music--Country AND Western! And as a DJ, I have been known to play a little of almost any other "flavor" of music, at one time or another... but regardless of what I'm playing, the right speaker still doesn't work properly. Hopefully it's a connection thing, but I'll have to wait for it to warm up a little bit start "monkeying" around with it.
