hey, guys I've got an early 2003, I'm getting a checksum error code.

the dealer says a new computer is in order.

the truck runs fine as far as i can tell.

found the problem when trying to install a smarty programmer.

are there good alternatives besides a new ecm from the dealer

Here's what the PDM says:

P0602 - Checksum Error

When monitored: While the ignition is on

Set condition: A deviation between the ECM memory and a stored calibration.

There are only 2 possible solutions.

1. Reflash the ECM with the proper calibration for the particular truck.

2. If (1) fails, replace the ECM.

If the dealer already tried the reflash and it didn't work, your only option is a new ECM.

I had one guy tell me to try a used ecm from a salvage yard and have the dealer flash it to match the VIN

that would be a cheaper route unless i get a used one with the same problem

The dealer wanted 2200 and a used one is 200 - 450

Be very careful when trying a used controller. If your truck has SKIM, you need a controller with or without SKIM, as when you plug in the new controller and turn the key on, the SKIM message is sent to the controller and is there forever. You will need a scan tool to tell the SKIM module the PCM is replaced. If your truck does not have SKIM, you need a controller without SKIM, or if it does, you need the controller and SKIM module from the used truck, or a new SKIM module. You also need the VIN from the used controller to get the SKIM code from Chrysler to program it.

You will also get a VIN mismatch code and possible CEL that will probably not be able to be turned off. I can't recall on 2003 if the VIN can be rewritten in the ECM. Maybe someone else that has installed a used controller can help.

I used to get that code all the time with my original Smarty, it did not hurt anything. Bob and Marco were able to repair/fix with later programming.

Which Smarty software are you using?

I do not believe anything is wrong with your ecm, there were quite a few posts on that problem/glitch a couple of years ago.

When I plug in the smarty it says error unknown software and always has the p0602 code which i clear before trying the smarty. I bought the truck with 49,000 miles and have not touched it until 100,000 when I replaced the injectors with a set from infinite power and design. then the death wobble set in and I replaced bfg tires with nittos and replaced balljoints, shocks, tie rods and hub assemblies. The previous guy had tried an edge box and a tst box both which he removed sometime before selling the truck. Could these have left a trace which the smarty is not recognizing? Actually, Bob I think I did call you, and you had me do a little test run and I called you back with the numbers the smarty brought up and you said they were good. Then I tried downloading latest software for the smarty and couldn't get the zipped files to open up. thanks for your help guys, Conrad
