Heard today from a fellow worker that part times at Autozone, that there have been some problems with the Silverstars: 1. they draw higher current current (reportedly burnt a harness in a Chrysler LaBaron), 2. it was reported they have caused the lamp connectors to begin to melt.



If I use them, I would modify the wiring to run them off the battery and use the normal circut to activate two 30 amp relays.

Another concern was expressed about the amount of heat that would be generated in the lamp bucket. Excessive heat might damage the lens or the reflector.



Experiences or hearsay is okay.

I do not have the Silverstar bulbs but thought they were stock wattage with better light. Don't see how that could melt anything :confused:. I have run aftermarket 100/80 watt bulbs in two trucks for a couple of years without any problems. Relays are a good thing and I use them on my PIAA driving lights and should have on the 100/80's but just haven't gotten around to it.



I just purchased a set of Sport headlights and plan to use the 100/80's in the 9004 slot but don't know what folks think is best in the other side. Larry
 
Rattlin, I use a higher wattage bulb 100/80 and I purchased a complete headlight harness to run directly off the batteries like you mentioned building!! I am pleased with the results and the harness is beefy. It also comes with relays. I would have liked it to be a couple inches longer but it will fit. I ran the harness on top of the radiator brackets. Here is the information if you would like it.

I just checked and they don't make them anymore. However, with their bulbs you don't need them. Sorry about the hype.



BTW I did a search and there are other companies that do carry them for around $50.
 
Have a Piaa Super White in the passengers side and a Silverstar in the driver's side. Don't waste your money on the Piaa bulbs cause the Silverstars are slightly brighter and half the price. As for the reason for having both bulbs... ... . had a Piaa burn out and didn't feel like blowing another fortune on bulbs.
 
Silverstars & Homemade Harness

I installed a set of Silverstars a couple weeks ago and they put out a noticeably whiter light that the "Cool Blues" they replaced. According to the package they came in, their light output is about the same as a stock 9004 bulb, however, the light appears much whiter.



I did construct a powering harness that uses 12V 30 Amp relays to reduce the voltage drop to the bulbs. My harness uses two relays, which controls and supplies direct battery voltage (14. 2 VDC) to both filaments, eliminating the normal voltage drop of the truck wiring. The control harness is similar to the "Bright Box" Geno's sells and keeps the low beam filament on when you turn on the high beams.



It's not as good as the Sports Headligh conversion but it does make driving at night more pleasureable.

Rattlin, Did you measure your before and after voltages??? I am curious to know what the voltage was before you installed the relays.
