My last duty station was VF-41 in Oceana, VA. As the MMCO, I was in charge of all maintenance actions both good and bad. It turned out that our line division was using simple green when washing the A/C every fourteen days. Well the aircraft looked great, but the aluminum was starting to pit quite badly. Of course this was found by the annual inspection by fighter-wing... not good. Simple green does eat aluminum!!!

Rick, Super Clean may be even worse on aluminum, but they have a new formulation that is labeled safe for aluminum, it's best to look for it and use. The only time I've had trouble with the old formulation on aluminum is if it isn't rinsed immediately, then it will cause spotting. Super Clean is also tough on some types of paint if left on too long, I've never had trouble on a car or truck paint job, but on a John Deere tractor the rinse water comes off green.

Hey guys I ran across this article about Simple Green. It seems that our boys in blue from the Air Force are told to not use Simple Green because of its corrosivness to aluminium. A study put a 3. 5 gram piece of aircraft grade aluminium in Simple Green for 7 days and it was reduced by 295 mgrams. Now I know this isn't much but we don't have high grade aluminium parts on our beloved cummins.

I love simple green; works great. What someone else said -- rinse well. No problems. ps: It takes stains out of carpet too.

I washed my engine with simple green a couple of weeks ago. Now I am going to rise again to make sure I got it all off. It sure did clean it though.

It sure does make cleaning bug residue from the front of vechicles easy,spray on and let it work for 2-3 minutes and wash and they come right off I use it on chrome,glass and plastic,not on paint. JMHO

I agree the citrus solvent is good stuff, but it isn't expensive if you buy it right. I pay $80 for a 5 gallon pail of 100% pure, a gallon is around $20. Buy it from an agricultural supplier under the name D-Limomoline, it is used in sprays. Be careful of the 100% pure though, it will dry your skin so badly that it cracks and bleeds if you get it on you. Mixes good with water. Best thing I've found for removing tar and gummy labels.

I've been using citrus solvent for degreasing the engine. Works great, smells even better! #ad

Expensive as hell though.

Eric, found out that what I am using is much more expensive because it is registered as a pesticide. Here is a source for $42. 62 for a five gallon bucket of D-limonene. I'll bet if you look around more you will find it closer to avoid shipping(about 40 pounds), and maybe even cheaper. When you buy it as a cleaner it is a total rip-off, this is exactly the same thing, but more concentrated, be careful.

I used to use simple green to wash my dirt bikes, until I relized it was removing that new shine. But then I discovered mop and glow could put that new shine back on!
