Hi all,

Looking for advice on getting a new single turbo for my 2007 Ram 2500 5. 9L. My truck is mainly used for daily driving and towing a 26ft camper, though we are looking to upgrade to a 36ft fifth wheel in the spring, hence the reason for a new Turbo. transmission will be rebuilt over the winter. Can't afford the compound turbo setup, so a good single turbo would be nice.

Appreciate any advice you could give!!

Are you having issues now? High egt's? I would believe as long as you backed the Edge down you could tow just fine with the stock turbo. A 36' 5th wheel can be a load, I am glad that I have a 30ft 5th wheel, as large as I care to go.

If you are looking for an excuse to upgrade your turbo, that's different:-laf.

I would stick with a 62mm compressor wheel, and a 65mm turbine, with either a 13 or 14cm housing, if you are worried about spoolup a 12cm housing will help.

I actually had great results towing with a 62/71/14, the 71mm turbine did lag a tiny bit on take off, but once moving it was great. I had stock injectors, EZ on 2, and my TST on 2/2, it towed great without high egt's. I never got to tow with that turbo and my Smarty, so I cannot speak to that.

HTT has a 62/65/13 with a stainless steel housing that would work great, and if you decide to go compounds later it would be a great secondary charger. You could also hang an S400 under your stock charger now, would not cost that much more than a big single...

You could not even offer Me twins for My 62/71/12 silver With My mods and setup, I agree with JJ 62/65/12 for towing, You are More then Welcome to contact EEngels He had a short ride this weekend in My 03. .

Thanks guys for the info. Nothing wrong with the current stock turbo, (not counting the time i accidently sucked a shop rag down into the turbo, and spent the next few days pulling pieces out of it!) just looking for a little more muscle, and the ability to keep EGT's down to a minimum. The new 5th wheel trailer we are looking at is actually pretty light. It's one of those new Helium technology fifth wheels. It is 36'5" and weighs 9423lbs dry. Here is a link if anyone is interested...

I've got a 62/65/14 HTB2 in my 04 and it has performed FLAWLESSLY. My rig dyno'd out at 520/983 on my stock injectors and CP3. I tow/haul fairly heavy (with truck camper, flat bed car hauler and '77 K5 and gear I'm at around 23k GVW) and I wanted something that would spool well and not run too hot. I don't have to dial my TST down at all and the EGT's stay around 1k or less the whole time even on big grades going thru the Tehachapi's, Donner summit, etc.

If you're looking for a good towing single turbo that will keep EGT's in check, still spool great without tons of mods, not smoke excessively AND give you a good increase in performance... the HTB2's are a good choice. Good luck!!

Ok, so I believe I have it narrowed down to either PhatShaft or HTT, possibly 62/65/14 config. Any pros/cons with either vendor?

Todd i am confused a bit? i thought the silvers had 74 and 14 not 71 and 12? is this a hybrid?

Thanks

last week i bolted a htt 12/62/65 on my 2005 dodge ram

it spools better than stock only mods is a homemade exhoust and a smarty.

but it may get hot. . so why dont you try 13ss or 14?

god thing about the 12 housing is that it will bolt up with their compound setup

if you later deside to upgrade.

i think you shoud give sourceautomotive. biz a call.

Not sure on the other vendor but I know HighTech will really work with you and your existing turbo if you decide to do future upgrades. They’ll swap compressor housings, wastegates, compressor/exhaust wheels, etc. and it’ll save you some $$ in the long run. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the performance of my HTB2 that I got from them and have had on my rig for over 18 months now. Getting ready to tow my junk out to Moab in two weeks for a week of wheeling and R&R…. and I’m actually looking forward to the over 2000mile roundtrip to get there…. driving the truck with the setup I have IS that much fun.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I recommend a 12 or 13 SS for better low end and midrange performance (= better mileage). The 14 will cost you MPG but is better for top end performance (WOT/drag racing) over the 12 or 13.

I know, I started with the 14 and ended up getting the 13 SS later and mileage went up about 1 MPG.

The bigger turbo and bigger tires were the only 2 mods I've done that cost me MPG.
