Lost Thread

Hey Steve - The site is realllly slow today. (10/14/02 1240 pm)Is it your end or the server again? Or my end?

Stan

It looks like something on the backbone again. I've checked everything out on the server and it's fine. I have a call into the co-lo facility to have them see if it's something on their end or a back bone issue.

Steve,

It's almost like being on dial-up again.

Several times the page would never load.

Probably back-bone related, but all other sites I've visited are still running normally.

If there's a fix, I know you'll find it. ;)

Here's the response from our hosting facility:

We have had a few calls this morning regarding this issue, but after extensive testing we cannot locate any problem on our network. As best as we can figure there may be some problem downstream from us, but all our tests show nothing out of the ordinary with our network. We`re thinking maybe there is a problem concerning a peering point downstream from us, perhaps with internap, but we have no way of knowing for sure. We are continuing to monitor the situation and to run tests, but so far nothing has presented itself. We apolgize for this situation, but as it stands right now, assuming the difficutly is not with your server or your ISP, then, being downstream from us, this issue is outside of our network jurisdiction. You may want to call your ISP and see if they can address the problem. We cannot call them because we are not experiencing any problems that we can give them as evidence of a problem on their end, but perhaps you can gather some info on the connection problems on your end, hopefully enough

Just an FYI - it looks like it's a backbone problem and we'll just have to wait for it to get fixed.

Perhaps our loving, caring and concerned government upgrading their "Here's looking at YOU kid" software as part of their ongoing "Looking over yer shoulder" Internet monitoring program...

Ever hear of "Carnivore"...

6:30 AM Pacific time Tuesday morning.

If this gets any slower I may as well just shut it off. It's worse today than yesterday.

Network Performance

Steve,

I'm a retired network engineer - so I know a little about network performance issues.

In looking around on the Internet I was able to learn that you are using an ISP called capitalinternet. Your server came back with IP 216. 25. 255. 9. In doing trace routes from around the US, I did find abnormally slow response time (486ms average) right at your ISP. It appears your ISP has a DS3 (54Mbps) uplink into Exodus - it would be extremely difficult for most ISPs to over-run a DS3. So just from that small data - I would not suspect a backbone problem - but a problem with your local ISP.

You mentioned that you had co-location - often in co-loc facilities many servers share common switches and uplinks - you might start there but I suspect your ISP will claim all is perfect. Remember ISPs make their money by over-subscription - in other words they assume that not all customers will use all the bandwidth at one time - but often ISP are not good about monitoring the perfomance.

My suggestion to you is to open a dialog with your ISP - ask for performance monitoring tools that allow you to see into their network. If they can't or won't allow that - start looking for another provider. And this time look for someone with multiple uplinks into their access providers.

Good luck

Bill

I speed checked and am running 5200KbpS east coast return ping. When I speed check thru megapath to CA it stops responding.

Whaaas happoneeeeng?

I'm applying all the pressure possible to our hosting facility to find the problem. The server loads continue to be at all time lows and that's because traffic isn't getting through. Billz - the 216. 25. 255. 9 IP address is the router going into the facility. They don't allow pings to pass that router. The problem won't show up in a ping though anyways - the initial load is going through fast most of the time. Because the forum pages are large and load up in pieces it's coming in multiple packets and some of those packets are being dropped along the way. I'll be talking with them about it again in the morning - and raising my voice another 10 db or so. . . . .
