Help: Six Sp B &d Short Shift Problems
HELP!!! PLEASE! :{
I am having the B&D Short Shift pop out several times @ 45,000 miles aprox on the 6 speed (the short shifter @ 40,000 miles). (115,000 on a '99 1 ton souped to 350 to 400 hp (never dynoed. )
It appears there is no discernable wear on either tran gears, bearings, fork; and no discernable wear on the linkage (short shifter). There is a piece of cracked plastic (ceramic blend?) that fits over the end of the lingage that is not shown in the breakdown of the linkage that I downloaded from B&D. (I think that that was a packing piece that was mistakenly put in there. )
I called B & D and the transmission man hadn't heard of this.
I called Standard Transmission, and he said put in the old shifter (I had put it in the scrap pile, and can't find it.
The transmission (and truck) is probably subjected some abuse because it is needed as a company gofer truck (I wish we had another alternative), and a small variety of cowboy type drivers herding it around. (to my chagrin and fear)
The linkage has always been (the original OEM lingage was worse) tight, notchy, and a little vague, and sometimes hard to get it into gear. So I can imagine that it has been forced into gears, and because some of the drivers were over the road truckers, perhaps it has been shifted with out the clutch at times. I think I forgot to tell them this was a no- no).
The transmission oil has been changed pretty well (at least 4 or 5 times. (I've never noticed any significant iron content when it was drained. )
The main problem is the linkage popping out of place (then just loose, (although sometimes you can still get 3rd and reverse. (4th, 5th, and sixth also)
We did try shimming it up (one more than what was in there) one thin shim, but that did not work. (In fact popped out faster)
We need the dodge, so any education, or tips or theories might help.
We don't know whether to bring in the transmission, or tear it apart. I'm not sure where to bring it (live outside of Pepin, WI about 80 miles SE of the cities)
I do have a competant mechanic presently (who has a little experience with transmissions, but not the dodge 6 sp, but he has been wasting his time, putting in the linkage, and having it pop right back out again without anything appearing to be wrong.
Competant observations or similiar experiences with this would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Dean Antilla
