Does any one have the Spec # for the Gear Oil in our 6 speed trannys. Picked up oil at a local dealer and they gave me spec# 04874464. It says for a nv3500 on the bottle. I don't feel that it is the right stuff! HELP Please! THanks in advance... ..... Kurt
I'll go and run out to the shed here-I think the extras are still here-also I'll go and have a look in my service manual while I'm outside. Back in a few shakes!
JHansen, While you're out in the shed can I Borrow your Rake??
Thanks for checking. I am anxious to get the Old "LIFETIME" gear oil out and get some new oil in. I am also going to install FASTCOOLERs on my transmission and transfer case. It looks like a great product and anything that add 50% oil capacity and cools the tranns oil down is a GREAT IDEA!!
Checked in my owner's manual to be sure-that's the part # that they list as well! I changed mine out around 15000 kilometres ago for peace of mind. Probably will upgrade it to some synthetic in the future when the optimum replacement shakes out-but for now I used the factory stuff.....
Gotta drop you a line to talk turbo stuff with you too man... . right now my combo is pretty mild (EZ/275's/Dynomax catback) but I'm pretty sure I'm getting myself a COMP for Christmas and probably by springtime I'll have myself talked into DDIII's-'course I gotta do my clutch first... Thinking that I'm gonna be out of the efficiency map of Piers' Super Turbo with the extra stuff-and I don't want to buy turbos twice like it seems I've done with everything else . I know your e-mail address is on here somewhere-could you maybe save me the time looking for it and post it again? Also got anyone distributing north of the 49th for you?
Sorry man no rakes in this shed -they've got a separate storage place. Just my brother's street bike, a Craftsman garden tractor, some of my extra oil, and quite a few empty bottles! You can have some of the bottles if you pay the shipping...
Wish I was smart enough to get all my thoughts in 1 post....
The fill plug is a weird size-19mm allen head? Dad took a 3/4" bolt and ground the head so it fit nicely into the plug-then we just double-nutted it and used a wrench to back the plug out. Works mighty fine-actually have it riding in my toolbox just in case.
You probably knew this in advance-just thought I'd let you know just in case. Sucks to have the oil on the ground and find out you can't put it back in especially if it's your only vehicle
Think I've cleared my head of random thoughts for right now anyway... .
Bet if I had been smart enough to actually read your signature I could have figured out your e-mail address all by myself -I think I must have drank too much beer last night-apparently some of the brain cells I killed were important after all
(Unique manual transmission lubricant specifically blended for the NV 3500 transmission) as stated on the back thier part # 04874464 manual transmission lubricant. Same part # on the PTO cover on the NV 5600. I'ts the same stuff !
I can't resist in saying add a fastcooler, add oil capacity (50%)add cooling. Piers has quoted a 40 degree drop on the same pull with fastcoolers. Alot of companys quote a 10 degree drop in temp. doubles the life of the oil, and a 20 degree drop doubles the life of the transmission, and 90% of transmission failures are heat related.
Blumenthals in Oklahoma City say 50% of thier manuall rebuilds have been burnt. Either by using the wrong oil or the lack of oil, or the life of the oil is gone.
To get the most life out of a transmission, keep it cool always.
I knew it was weird sized-just couldn't remember the size for sure!
Should have measured the home-made tool we fabbed I guess----also should have known that if it truly was 19mm wouldn't have had to grind on a 3/4" headed bolt to fit in.
Thanks for fixing my screw-up Tom!
Jason
P. S. Someday I'm a-gonna get me one of them Fastcoolers-got a few other things I gotta take care of first...
FYI---------Volkswagon Transaxles on most of the old bugs use the same size allen wrench... They are easy to find and cheaper than buying the wrench at napa. I found mine in the help section at autozone...
I thought that was the same size as my old Snap-On hex socket that I purchased for the VW transaxle drain (or fill plug... I can't remember now. . too many years ago). Anyway, I told Rob Hanson when we were in NAPA yesterday that I thought the socket I had would work on his NV5600 although I wasn't exactly sure (hadn't looked for the socket yet)... he ordered the Allen wrench anyway.
Today I found a socket/Allen, are chrome & fit on to a 3/8in ratchet. . I am ordering a box of them so I can get them wholesale. Anyone interested they will be less than $5. 25
GOOD NEWS FOR 6SPEEDS IN THE DALLAS/FT. WORTH AREA. KNIGHTCO OIL CO. ON NORTH SYLVANIA JUST NORTH OF 28TH STREET OFF I-35W. UNLESS HE HAS SOLD THEM HE HAS FOUR 5 GAL. BUCKETS LEFT OF TEXACO GEAR OIL. I BOUGHT ONE MYSELF FOR UNBELIEVEABLE PRICE OF $47. 00 PLUS TAX. I THINK THEY ALSO HAVE PLACE IN DALLAS.
