I saw a earlier post about the six speed jumping out of gear. Has that been fixed?? I see that there are getting to be a lot of you guys with the six speed. Do you like it????? I have lost confidence in my auto for towing and am considering a change. Whats the concensus?????

Gene, I have been buying the autos for years cause I figured I was getting to old and lazy to shift but now that I have went back to shifting I love it!!!!!!! I think my next one if there is a next one will be a stick also. Pete

Gene-C,

Just like you, I debated for a while before ordering my 6 speed. I got advice from several TDR '99 6 speed owners and made the plunge. My dealer's Sales Manager had a 6 speed and they let me drive it for a day. He knew that if I drove one I would buy one!! I ordered one a couple of days later--it's the best thing I did!! I've had no problems with it at all.

3 other TDR members have traded their automatics for 6 speeds after driving my truck and they are all happy with theirs too.

Where it really shines when you hook on and pull. Best choice I made in a long time.
Good luck in what ever you choose.

My six speed, started jumping out of gear(3rd gear when it was cold)around 14000 miles. Got a new transmission last week. I do like the 6spd.

Gene,

Try it, you'll like it!! Only had mine for 3 months, but so far it's been great, especially when pulling, no problems at all. I've heard about problems with a 3rd gear clash and problems getting into reverse, in fact a used 2000 I test drove before ordering my 2001. 5 was very difficult to get into reverse, the guy took it back to the dealer & was told that it's "normal" with that trans. I don't know if these problems were with early production units or if it's a quality control luck of the draw type issue. I have been very satisfied with my choice of the 6 speed, the only thing I would change if I could would be to make the shift lever a little less "rubbery" feeling, it's not a big deal though, haven't had any problems with missed shifts or anything, just would prefer a more precise/solid feel.

I had a 96 auto with a camper and towing a boat. Had nothing but trouble. I got so fed up ordered 2001. 5,HO 6speed. Had about 3 months now and could't be happier. It's been said before "If you tow go manual".

Love the 6 speed #ad
Ratios are spaced just right for the Cummins imo. Never need first unless you're towing/hauling heavy. 6th is great on the freeway with 3. 54 rear gear. Mine was stiff when new, but now at 10,000 it's great. 1st can be tricky if you don't shift while rolling to a stop. For reverse if stopped, going 3rd,5th then reverse with the clutch in works every time for me.

Like Bill Stockard, I had a great '97 with almost $8,000 in upgrades, but after driving the 6 speed it was all over. I love my 6 speed and wouldn't go back.

RedRam, Glad you got a "perfect" one #ad
Mine is geting easier as the miles go by (10,000 on the ODO last month) It's much changed for the better since new, but still ocassionally is tough to get into 1st or reverse unless I use the tricks I posted. I gotta say I'm real happy with it even with the quirks. I'm getting ready to change the fluid to get rid of the break-in metal. I'm hoping I can get a good look at the gearsets and dogs with the PTO cover off.

Got to love the 6-speed. No problem with 1st gear. Reverse was tricky at first but now I just don't get in a hurry and things work fine...

As for towing, bring it on, this transmission loves it!!!!

Walter Crovo: or anyone. What is a cogs IMHO ??????? Yes I am going to tow. Thats why I'm sick of the auto. I pull a 10,000 lb 5er. Thanks all for the reply. It sounds like most are satisfied.

I love my 6spd. I pull a 15K lb 5th wheel and drive around DC in traffic. Never get tired of shifting. There was a while I thought I wanted 4. 10s, but I've come to realize the awsome combination of the Cummins, the 6spd and the 3. 54s can't be beat. Wuta truck!

I've had my six speed since Oct. 2000. Shifted smooth then and has only gotten better with miles. I live in a rural "hill infested" community and thought that I'd be doing alot of shifting prior to receiving the new truck. Not the case at all with the six speed, there's plenty of rpm range to choose from while in 4th or 5th gear. I never see 6th gear unless on the highway.

Dane,
All 6 speeds must not be created equal, you mentioned having to employ some tricks to engage 1st or reverse. From day one mine has gone into 1st, reverse or any other gear as easily as the wifes Nissan Maxima. Speaking of the little woman, she has no problems shifting gears either, I drove a Y2K 6 spd and she would not have been able to get that sucker into reverse if her life depended on it.

You will not regret the 6speed. It is superior to the auto in several ways. I thought I would suffer and shift when I dumped my 99 auto but it has turned out to be a pure pleasure, I enjoy this 6 speed sooooooo much more than the auto. If you are going to tow get cogs IMHO. I would get the 6 speed again even if I wasn't going to tow. Not to mention the extra power of the HO.

gene... i'm on my 5th cummins,4 were auto. .
92,93,96,92. . and now, i finally got the 6 speed with 4:10's... . i now have about 9k on the truck, and it works great!!!shifting is a breeze,i haven't had any problems shifting that weren't caused by "operator error"!!!
i would not hesitate to purchase another 6 speed... even in stop and go traffic, driving is a piece of cake... good luck!!!... . tom

Dane,

Glad yours keeps getting better! I guess I must be living right or something as my trans works perfectly and I haven't had any of the "common" problems I've been reading about (with the exception that one of my console tabs broke off last week).
I'm also planning to change the "dope" in my trans before too long, either at 5K when I do the first oil change or possibly oil change no. 2 at 10K. Are you going with the Texaco gear lube recommended by DC/NV? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the transmission warranty would be voided with any other product. I'm planning to stick with the Texaco and was wondering where to buy it, anyone know if some of the chain parts stores carry it?
