I have a 2003 with the six speed. I have now 8500 miles on it and it is starting to grind when you put it into reverse. It never did this until the other day. So I took it to the dealership and they told me it was perfectly normal with the six speed. If it is normal why didn't it do it before. My dad has a 2001 and his has never done it before. I was just wondering has anybody else had this problem and if there is a way to fix it what is it.

Mine does has done same thing since around 10000 miles it now has 36000. If you shift it into first before going to reverse it won't do it. I just figured the stock clutch is junk.

When I took it into the shop they said that reverse is not synchronized. Thanks for the replys keep them coming.

Mine started that at about 2500 (5500 now) miles... . Just pop it in 5th then reverse. I was going to take it to my dealer and see what they had to say... just haven't yet.

Sounds to me like your clutch may be dragging when you have it dis-engaged. The reverse gear does't have synchros so if the input shaft is spinning when you try to shift into reverse, you will get some grinding. I have an auto so I am not familiar with clutch linkage to know if it is adjustable. If it is hydraulic, check to see if you are not low on hydraulic fluid for the clutch master cylinder.

As per the service manual

"The NV5600 is a six speed constant mesh manual transmission

All gears ranges including reverse are synchronized"

In my opinion you have a bad reverse synchro

19200 miles on mine now (11 months old) do not believe I've ever heard reverse grind ( no I don't put it in a different gear first):D Mark

Reverse is the only gear I don't have an issue with. 3rd is where I grind - and if it doesn't grind it is notchy as is 4th , 5th, and 6th. Very seldom do I get a smooth shift. Dealer looked at the guts when they had the case open to replace the front seal but said everything looked ok. Said to drive it and see what happens so I'm driving it - and loving it.

I did that more than once when I first got my truck:eek: . I have about 10K on it now and have no grind going into reverse.

Any safety or interlock to protect reverse?

All three times that I've tried for 7th gear, it ground  . I have now had it for almost two months, with about 2,200 miles (above the 45,100 when I got it used). Is there no safety or interlock to prevent grinding into reverse while underway (I'm ususally at about 60+ mph when the urge hits me for OD and I try for 7th, although I did hit it once when speed-shifting into almost 5th) ?????

In my 6-speed, most shifts are slowed because of an unwillingness to fall into gear without some effort exerted on the shift lever. I would hate to see my times on a 1/4 mile :-laf ... I thought that I might try to change the transmission oil when I get the next oil change to see if that loosens it up.

My buddy had the same problem with his he took it to his dealer and they said it was normal... . A week later i drove it and let him know that it was not normal to grind into reverse, so he took it to my dealer and they pulled the transmission and replaced something in the transmission... Not sure what it was now no problems... Mine has 52,000 miles no problems with transmission YET ;)

Its not normal for any grinding in any gear but I have two 02 6 speeds and they both do it going into revese there out of warrnaty so I just deal with it.

early 04, just turned one year old a couple of days ago... has 76K and I've had no problems with reverse or any other gear... ... . I often shift with no clutch on the highway after a start... . I do know that I'm always in one gear or another when I stop to put it in reverse... don't remember the last time I just started the truck, put the clutch pedal down and tired to put it in reverse... . I always park it in 1 or 2 so once it starts its from there... .

I agree with the others above... it's not normal to have a problem going into any gear...
