I am having problem shifting my six speed transmission. It seems to hang up between 2nd and 3rd gear. When this happens I have to start all over again from 1st gear or back into 2nd. Does anyone know what the problem might be or how to fix?

Are you sure it actually hangs up bad enough that it will not go into gear. It seems alot of 6-speeds including mine when they are new it has a slight grind shift into 3rd from 2nd.

Ok I'm going to ask the $1,000,000 question. As per your sig you have a 98 loaded 2500 w/5 speed. So why the 6 speed question ???

What are you driving??? I do not believe there was a 6 speed in 98

The only time I use 1st gear is if towing heavy or in a parking lot.

What kind of problems are you having?? The 6 speed is real close and took me alittle while to get used to. My problem was with 5th and Rev. I learned to go with the flow and don't force it. "Kinda like a woman"

Good Luck

See Ya

Thanks for your replies. I guess I should have told you in my question that I was asking for a buddy of mine. He has a 2001 2500 with 6 speed and a Cummins HO Engine. The gear shift seems to be turning. One time you look at it the gear shift is straight where it is supposed to be. And later the numbers are half way around on it. The numbers eventually go around in a complete circle (about a week). The shifting problem is going up, not coming down.

Thanks for any help you can give.

DW, do you hear or feel any grinding when going from 2nd to 3rd, or does it feel like you just can't find the gear? These trannys are very tight and take several thousand miles to loosen up or better yet it takes the driver awhile to learn the shift pattern. Take a long hard look at what your friend is doing when he shifts and come back and ask the question again. A second look and some more information will help the experts here answer your question... ... ... Pete

I have a 2001 HO with the six speed of course. It is a little stiff shifting, but I have never had a grind when shifting up or down. One thing I have noticed, if I shift without the disengaging the clutch, it is very smooth. This works best if you go past 2200 rpm before upshifting, and you better be there for the next gear when the engine speed matches up otherwise you'll definitely grind it. I still use the clutch, but if I wait for it to drop into gear like when I was not using the clutch, the shifting is much smoother. Also, I have noticed that the shifting action is smoothing out as the miles go up (7500 and counting). By the way, I have the mystical rotating stick problem too; however, mine has only made it about half way around since I picked up the truck. I've tried turning it back, but it won't budge. I plan on checking into it soon. Forget the dealership. They will probably tell you this is normal.

DW the numbers on my shifter did the same thing. I took it back to my dealer and they put a new shifter in and covered it under warrenty.

TOW WITH THE POOR THING!

Two the things:

1. Going into a new 6 spd from a five speed gave me some horrible "muscle memory" that made the six speed seem to shift even worse than it does. Had to teach myself where the stick goes all over again. Still, it always seemed to "resist" going up to 3rd fm 2nd.

2. Mine didn't really settle down until I towed with it. The heavier(sp?) you can tow, the better. I can't stress this enough. It truly seemed both my engine or transmission didn't show their true colors until I started towing. Again, the heavier the better. I now have 9K on the clock and couldn't be happier. It does make a concerning noise when I slow on the gears but THAT is another story...
