skid plate?

I was comparing my new 3500 4x4 mega cab to another new 2500 4x4 quad cab and noticed that he had a skid plate and that I didn't. I assume it is for the transfer case. I drive on nonpaved roads alot and wondering if i should add one. If so how much trouble would it be. i. e cost, installing and where i can get one.

Mine just bolts on... came with the 'off-road' pkg with the tow hooks and the orange shock tubes (wow... ). I don't know about whether you 'should' have one, but they look cool - and that's WAY more important than 'need'.

The factory pieces will bolt on... ... ... holes already there for you

How much does Mopar want for one? I'm just wondering if it would be more cost effective to make your own. Even with basic tools it might be easy to make one that's stronger than Mopar for less.
