That's the added sound over the Cummins running when I walked out of the house this morning.

I had been out been out about 15 minutes earlier to start the truck. I flicked the wipers to clear the evening snow, but accidentally left it on intermittent mode.

The #$%^&* passenger side wiper blade was laying in the cowl gutter while the arm was still making regular passes over the glass.

Yep, it scratched the windshield. Luckily it is very light (barely catch it with a fingernail) and will check if local glass shop that replaced it 3 years ago can buff it out.

Moral of the story? Check you wiper blades.

Buffing, eh? I didn't know that was possible--anyone had this done successfully?

The reason I ask is, I was driving up I-75 for Christmas vacation, and right outside of Ocala, a big gob of shingles flew off the top of a mobile home in transit, broke my grille, scratched up the hood, took off a wiper, and scratched the windshield on its way up.

I've got the check from my insurance company (other guy never stopped  ), so I'm about to go looking for a good paint shop. The grille I think I'll get from eBay and fix myself--if I could get the glass 'buffed', I might just keep the windshield. I'd rather not have to mess with getting the A-pillar gauge mount off again, and I don't want my gauges getting messed up by the glass installer (may not be a concern--never seen how they replace a windshield).

So, anyone had this done, and were the results acceptable? Wipers still work and all, or does it leave a depression that they can't wipe clear?

I've had my windshields replaced in 3 Rams and they never had to take off the A pillar. Once they did leave broken glass in my defroster vents though .

HTH.

I'd rather not repeat a windshield replacement. Local shop that insurance directed me too wasn't the greatest.

They stripped put the plastic cowl retainers and either never replaced them or they departed in less than a week. The tech installed the weather stripping upside down. I'm very relieved it didn't leak. Never had 100% satisfaction with ANY glass shop I've visited.

I've still got paint damage from shingles blowing off a motel where I spent the night, 3 years ago. Insurance co replaced the damaged windshiled was waffled on the paint damage. I left it at the windshiled. Paint damage wasn't too bad.

Having old cars I know about the windshield buffing. If you can catch a finger nail in the scratch then it's too deep. If not then www.eastwood.com sells a windshield buffing kit you use in your drill motor. It's like the small round buffing cup your dentist uses to polish your teeth. The kit buffer is bigger though.
