O. K. I bit the bullet and ordered some new springs for the old goat. I had a lot of time to think about all the mods I wanted to do while I was in the desert. I think that the 1" will work because I do not want to run larger than a stock tire which is 215 85 16. I am just hopeing that the new springs don't make those tires look like some little dinky donut tires. The springs will be here next week and according to everyone I have talked to should make it ride a little better and even the truck out. I will keep you guys posted.

Check out my picture gallery. I put in 2. 5" skyjacker, still running stock tires. If you like what you see, then 1" should not be a problem. Personally, I don't think that they look too small, but then again I've been told my taste is all in my mouth:rolleyes:

that's a darn clean first gen you have there. Those tires look great to me. Are they the 235's ro the 215's like I have. From the looks of it maybe I should have waited before I put new rubbers on(bought new tires the other day). How does the ride seem?

Thanks:) They are 215's, Starfires (Cooper off brand). So far the tires have worn well, I definitely like the ride after installing the Skyjacker 2. 5" kit (new front spring packs, rear leveler spring). Also installed Skyjacker Nitro 8000 shocks. Wanted Rancho 9000's, but they did not have a shock to fit the travel range after installing lift :{ Of course, anything would be better since my front bump stops were only about 1/2" from the axle.

Pat

What is the distance from the axle to the bump stop after the lift, is it three inches. Looking to get the skyjacker system but has anyone heard how the new rear springs handle loads? Could also buy the new skyjacker rear springs and then beef them up by adding a leaf or two but money doesen't grow on trees, at least I have yet to find one that does, still looking though.

Thanks,

Jim

O. K. update on the spring deal. I got the new springs in and installed they were very easy to put in. BUT!!!! They are only a 5 leaf pack rather than the stock six leaf and the supposed 1" height gain only turned out to be about a 1/4-1/2" But because they are only a five leaf pack they left more room between the bump stop and the spring before I had only about 3/4" and now I have about 3". Because they are only a 5 leaf pack I expect them to sag and so when I do this job again I will definately just go with the front 2. 5" springs like everyone recommended(yeah I know rub it in all you want I deserve it:rolleyes: ). Overall though they do ride very nice and I did gain some height so it wasn't a total waste.

The 2. 5" kit I put in was also a 5 spring pack instead of 6, so I don't think you should beat yourself up over that. I talked directly with Skyjacker techs before buying and they said that the 2. 5" kit in our trucks yields closer to 2" because of the higher engine weight. My end results were ~3. 5" between the stops after the install. Overall I am happy with the results.

JSchlachta,

I have Skyjacker's 6" rear springs on my truck (to eliminate the 4" blocks on my '90) and they work just fine. I have a 14K fifth wheel and they hold up just fine under the weight. No need to add a leaf. I don't haul all the time but like I said they work fine for me. I have custom springs in the front that have sagged a little since the install two years ago. Next time I will go with the 2. 5" in the front. Just my $. 02.

Alcan Springs.....

I've had the SkyJacker 2. 5" Frt. Springs in my truck for almost 3 years now. I've enjoyed them and recommended them many times over.

However... . I'm begining to notice a bit of sag 100,000 miles later.

I'm looking at custom spring alternatives for a Cummins powered Kaiser M725 Ambulance project I've begun and ran across Alcan Spring in Colorado. They make custom springs similar to National Spring at competive prices.

Here's the quote info for W250 springs:

"The cost of springs customized up to 6" in lift: $195 each front spring

and $205 rear spring. They come with bushings and take about 3 weeks to

design/build. The springs would essentially be W250 springs. "

Just another option... ... . :)
