"Gas Guzzler Tax?" Sad But True

I have an old LULL forklift with a slant 6. Sorry but it's the only pic i have.

She is an old girl. The serial # on the cab is 204 and none of the address have zip codes on them. I dont know what year it is but i know it's a 225 slant six.

I have put all of the items listed on in the last 6 to 12 monts time.

Cap & rotor

Points ect

wires

plugs

fuel pump

New fuel tank

carb rebuilt Holly one barrel

very recent fuel filter

Motor ran great till few weeks ago. Now it just will not start. It seems that it is getting fuel. I have pulled and cleaned all the plugs and it has spark but will not take off.

Im not sure what it could be. Could the timing be off? how would you go about adjusting the timing?

I have tried to get it running no luck. any suggestions?

take the #1 plug out hold thumb over hole and pull the engine over at the point it stops making pressure it is tdc you can stick a wire in and get it closer , you should be able to find timing mark now on front ballancer pull the distributor cap off and check to see if the rotor is lined up with #1 wire and the points should be open . cant spell

I have had a lot of carb. problems on my slant six ( it's in a w-150 Dodge). I've had 3 different Holley carbs on it, and the floats are junk. My carb model is a 1945 Holley. I ordered a 1920 Holley so we'll see how it works. Timing is hard to achieve correctly on a slant six, at least with mine and from what others have said. If you have a vacuum advance from the distrubuter to carb. , unplug hose from carb. before you check your timing. Maybe this will help, these have aggravated me the most with mine.

You say it does not start. What does it do? Turn over fast, slow, try to catch, or even hit at all? Did you do any work on it before it quit starting?

It was running fine up till a few weeks ago then it was parked and didnt get run for a few weeks. When i tried to start it after that it wasnt getting any fuel. I cleaned the carb and put it back on and still nothing. it seens like the timing could be off but it did run after i cleaned the card but only for a little bit and it never idled on it's own. (it was cold out and would have run on it's own normally) after starting and quitting a few times it shut down and hasnt run. Sometimes it acts like it want to take off but it's just not happening. I haven't had time to really get in to it with the weather being nice over the last few days but this weekend in going to see if i can get her going.

I have had the plastic gear at the bottom of the distributor break on more than one slant 6.

Once the gear breaks, timing is off.

Easy to pull the dist and check.

The cam timing may have slipped. Not sure if it uses a gear drive or a chain.

Easiest is to check distributor position.

As described in post #2

If you say it won't idle, and you removed and cleaned the carb, I would say it is in the idle circuit ("jet") in the carb. With some assistance, see if it will run on brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner. If so, remove and clean every jet, port and circuit of the carburetor. Through the years, I have converted MANY gasoline powered forklifts to propane for these very reasons. Propane is not cold natured, requires no fuel pump, is very clean running, goes into the engine as a vapor, does not wash cylinder walls or foul plugs and has a simple carburetor system. Another thing that really helps on the ignition side is a Pertronix Ignitor which replaces the points and condensor with an electronic device. It is a direct replacement using the factory parts (dist, cap, rotor, coil). You will be surprised how much better an engine runs with electronic ignition versus points.

Points suck.

Dieselnut59 but how much is a electronic ignition?

Ben

$80-$100. They are made by Per-Lux and are called Pertronix Ignitor. Works GREAT. I have literally installed HUNDREDS of these things in my 18 years of mechanicing. Put them in all brands of forklifts, as well as older Ford, Dodge and International trucks, stationary equipment including an Onan generator, a pump unit, several welders and antique tractors.

You can convert a slant to electronic ignition with the factory system cheap. The whole kit from Mopar is only like $140-160 new. You can do the same thing with salvage yard parts dirt cheap. All you need is a single pickup electronic distributor, harness, ballast resistor and control module. It will run on the old coil, but mine ran better with the newer coil. The harness is still available seperate from Mopar Performance. With used parts and a new Mopar harness, I switched my 69 Valiant for like $60. The best part of this swap is you can get replacement parts at any parts store. Just look under a mid 70's p/u or Duster.

When you check the engine timing, don't be surprised if the balancer's timing mark does not match up with the crank at TDC. The outer ring on the balancer has a history of slipping. If you think it's jumped time just pull the front cover and check the gears for alignment.

that is why i had him find tdc with a wire and i have had more than one bad gear on the distributor , a quick check you can lay plug #1 down and hold the throttle open and crank the motor the plug should fire near the end of the air coming out of the plug hole, as stated try running it on starting fluid or brake cleaner that will tell you quick if carb or timing

The first thing I would do is try a little starting fluid in it. never had much luck with carb or brake cleaner. if it won't fire then I would pull the dist cap off and crank it over and make sure the rotor is turning. If so bring it up to TDC and make sure it is at #1 plug wire. if it is not turning then try the dist gear if that is ok then time to check the timing chain. These are pretty simple motors.

it looks to be the distributor there is a lot of play. how much play if any should there be. I would think not much. i would say you can move it about 3/4 side to side.

looking at getting a new one (w/ electronic ignition) regardless i would like to update a few things maybe a new carb to. I have some money to put in to it right now.

i haven't owned it very long but is looks as if it's been a long time since anyone did any work to it.
