Anyone here do any sled pulling in a first gen. Am considering it for this weekend just to see what it'll do. I am not sure what gears are in the truck but I assume its probably 4. 10's. In a 5 speed, what gear should I pull in and in high or low range? I am guessing if its high range probably 2nd..... and if its low range either 3rd or 4th. Truck is stock. Any suggestions?

I pull with my first gen. I'm also stock. I pull in 2nd gear, 4 wheel drive low. As soon as you get out of that clutch put the petal to the floor!! I didn't my first run, then people said I went slow but I went 109ft. So my next run I put the petal to the metal and went 189ft! Hope this helps! Good Luck! :D

I bet you have 3. 55 gears

Nail the fuel hard 2nd low range

if you have small tires around use them no bigger than 33's

If you can add weight do it to the front bumper use max imum allowed hitch height if a power joke can pull it a Cummins can there not called Cum -Along - for nothing

The reason I believe it has 4. 10, is it wont go faster than 80-85 to the mat on open road. I can cruise around town in 3rd gear. Tires are 285 75 16.

You will have to come off the line near idle, with just enough fuel to keep from killing the engine, then light it off when the clutch pedal is up. Anything more and you will drive right through the clutch. I've not pulled with 410;s, but with my 355s, 2nd gear low is all I could pull off the line.

I'd like you to use low side of the transfer case. High side puts alot higher load on the back of the transmission, and the input to the transfer case. I've seen lots of guys run high side, and break somthing between the transmission and t-case.

Spin your startwheel to the bottom, and grind your fuel pin. At least then you will leave a large cloud of smoke at the starting line, and have more fuel on tap to get the rpms up.

with my truck and 355s ? I have gotten 80 but the truck dont like it but it loves to cruise at 72 mph for best performance

when I had 4. 10s, I could only go 80 or maybe a hair more.

My 92 will go 90 in 4th, but that is also well over 3000RPM.

DVolk- how many RPMs are you turning? Reason I ask is ALL the 3. 54 trucks I've had would do 90 in OD with pedal to spare.

Im not shure how many rpm's im running , this is with 33" tires on so maybe i was doing 90 , i got 245s on it for now since they were free and it seems to run slow with that , it will run 80 but i dont like to push it that hard , but i think my injectors and pump might be a littel week , it turns over a few times before it fires , so im not shure what it it is but it is at stock specs still

All the first gens I've had except for one had the 3. 5 ratios, and all would cruiseto speeds over 90 mph. This one , there is no way to get it to go that fast.

With 300k plus on it, and not knowing the full history of the truck, I believe someone changed out the rears on it sometime in its life. I dont really know how to check.

Can you pull off the cover or would it be printed somewhere, to see?

Anyway, thanks for the tips guys.

jack it up and spin the driveshaft and see how many times you have to do it to get the tire to go around once. 3. 5 times= 3. 54's and so on. You can look at the tags on the diff but if you suspect someone changed them they'd be in accurate. I've had 10 first gens and only one 4. 10, so I'd think they're pretty rare.
