How many "OCCASIONAL" pullers out there pull on an HX40?

I bought some parts a while back to rebuild an HX40 turbo because the price was "right" and I knew once I got a good clutch I'd want to add more power (as well all do :-laf ).

So I'm still up in arms on who to send it to, but I'm leaning towards High Tech Turbo right now. Althought I just thought about it tonight and EEP was one place that I didn't call about a cartridge to rebuild it. Although I doubt they deal in those type's of things I bet they could give me some advise on pulling with it.

I don't plan on pulling more than 4 time's a year MAXIMUM, and I've heard as long as you keep the 40's wastegated below 40PSI then they will usually live. Well I plan on keeping it wastegated as well as an adjustable elbow on it to let it go no higher than 36PSI.

Comments, suggestions, thoughts wanted and appreciated.

.

I pulled with a 40 for a while and then on another one for a while and another. Guess I need to learn to drive. That was with a PDR 40 also. Good luck.

A PDR 40, so it was wastegated correct?

I'm not a puller, but I love watching from the sidelines :D

Me thinks Gene means pulling today with such a puny turbo would be like bringing a box cutter to a machine gun fight :p

i haven't blown a wastegated 40 up. i blew a one that wasn't wastegated though. it's not recommended to pull with one though. kinda like playing russian roulette.

Hmmmm... .

Lets see if I can write this down in words even he can grasp so it will help eliminate extra posts on the same subject.

Mark...

To sum up or answer your question I'll tell you a comment one of the major pulling players from the midwest made to me when I asked just such a question of him a few years ago... .....

"Sure you can use a big single charger to do this as the same power levels can be attained with a single charger. The problem arrises when you try(keyword)to make it live when that sled slams all the weight front and loads the rear of the truck. In that transition period of going from HP pulling the sled to TQ is where the most amount of damages occur. Boost levels rise, pressure is increased greatly and stress on the main shaft of the compressor is way above what it is designed to do. So to sum it up,Yes you may use a single charger, but why take a knife to a gun fight. "

Seemed like a good enough explantion to me... ..... Andy

I didn't pull very many times on my PDR HX-40 and they do hold up to the pulling though if you fuel the turbo very hard you are still going to blow by the wastegate up into the higher boost levels. I have about 20,000 miles on my HX-40 and am getting ready to send it in to get it rebearinged and resealed as I noticed a lot of play in the shaft the other day when Iwas changing my oil. However, this is probably not from puling alone as I use my truck everyday and pull many trailers with it that weigh up around the 24,000 to the day in 30, 000 plus range which cannot help anything on my poor little turbo. Hope this helps.

What I meant was, do you feel lucky yours will live more than one pull?

DSteinel just beat a twin truck with one, but his truck lives a charmed life.

Ok let me make sure everybody understands that I don't plan on pulling the truck at every pull I can attend.

I only want to pull on occasion for the fun of it. Pulling is a rich man's sport and I'm not rich.

I cannot afford a $1500 turbo that's just plain and simple.

I think what I'm gonna end up doing it just sending it to Piers in the long run to make it as "bulletproof" as possible.

I am in need of a bigger turbo with my 300M's and my #10 anyways, and I got a great deal on these HX40 parts (even have an extra exhaust housing for sale).

mark, sending it to piers would be a great idea. but i am pretty sure that he'd say the same thing. they aren't recommended for pulling. it is a great towing turbo, and an occasional drag racing turbo. but it's just not designed for pulling. kinda like flipping a quarter. the first one i had lasted for 2 years and i pulled it a bunch!

just put it on and run it, Darryl poole also ran one for a long time and had no problems and he was running more fuel than either of us

For the Heavyweight puller guys, the competition isn't that developed around here--where Mark will pull mostly.

We don't see twins and 6000RPM launches. :--)

A few guys are running big singles and tickling 4000RPM and Mark is talking about having fun, not dominating the track. Now how he can keep it down to FOUR hooks, I don't know. We're looking at 3 pulls in my county alone next season. :D Plus all the practice hooks...

I don't recommend the 40 either, but what do I know. Run whatchabrung!
