I was wondering from the auto. guys if anyone pulls or has pulled on the high side of four wheel drive? If so, do you manually shift or just put it up in drive or second and let it go? I didn't know if i could get it going in high.

When I pull I take off the 35's, and run a set of 265 radials. With all that sled weight you will usually have plenty of traction. :) I also stay in low range, lock out o/d , and hammer it.

Here is my . 02 worth.

Low range, come off of the line and manualy shift it in to second when you hit redline. As soon as you get into second lock it up and on most tracks keep it in second.

Low range second gear and 3. 5 gears is what for wheel speed? Maybe 15 MPH? Is that really enough? Why not third for 22-25 MPH, or OD for 35 MPH wheel speed? It seems to me from watching the pulls that wheel speed for the guys that are doing well is easily 30+MPH... ... ... .

It takes a LOT of motor or a light sled to go into third and run good there. JMO

Thanks for all the info. guys. With these injectors ;) and turbo i should have plenty of power, but like J. R. said, i will have to check out the sled and track first before jumping into third. I have pulled once before in low and went to sec. The track was like slick pavement so the tires were spinning plenty fast just couldn't get traction. I just want to put on a decent show at my county fair next weekend. As long as theres not an output shaft laying on the track after my run i will be happy. :)

I have an 03 with a 6-speed, and southbend clutch. Soon to have DD3's and DD turbo. Just not sure what gear to pull in. Third or fourth, high range or low range. Thanks for any advice. I am new to this and I am hearing different opinions.

Dan :)

A strong truck with a good tight TC will snap an output shaft in 4hi unless the track is ultra loose. Use 4 low and let it run into 2nd gear low, unless you have 450+hp or its a real light sled. I pulled in 3rd low with 4. 10 's last yr with 425hp,it pulled great.

Dan,

With my 6-speed and 4. 10 gears I run in 4low 3rd gear and take her to 3200 and hold her there. My OFE holds great and the truck speed works well, 4th gear would be pushing it a bit IMHO.

Yeah, me too--total pulling novice, but going to do it for fun.

I'm going to start pulling next year with a juicer. I'll be around 350 HP, have 3. 54's, and well worn 265 AT tires on the truck.

Have a second set of wheels. Wondering what size tire to put on them for a pulling option. Don't want two sets of the same size. Well-worn mudders or half-worn A/T's?

Oh, and one of our tracks is 400' long.

BTW Anybody know where my "sled pulling for dummies,or 101" or whatever I called it thread went? I can't find it.

i pulled on the hi side of the tc a few times. i found that drive on the low side was a better pick. i never tried the high side with 3. 54 gears. only with the 4. 10's. when i pulled with the auto locking the tc up in 1st gear and shifting manually depending on the sled and the track to first, second, and maybe third. when i pulled on the hi side i never could get the truck to go into second gear. you can get 30 + mph if you have a 4gsk and wind it up. just my opinion.

Hey Nick,

Yeah, I meant to axe about lockup too. What about waiting until 2nd to hit lock, any benefit other than a smoother ride for the sled operator?

And the brakes, man I just got a boost gauge on there and you've REALLY got to stand on the pedal to build boost. It's making 35 btw. 'bout right for now.

more sled pulling ???

Next question for everybody: How important are traction bars for pulling? Other sus. mods like bags, shocks, etc?

What gets broken the most on "street stock" trucks? Are there ways to avoid such breakage. I know to stop if it bounces.

wade, in my opinion, you don't need traction bars, but you do need ladder bars that will keep your rear end from twisting up. that's what breaks pinions. we always blocked the rear end up until i went to schieds a couple of years ago and they wouldn't let you do it. as for the tc lock up. it made a huge difference in my truck to the tune of 10'-15'. the only problem is that you either have to put the truck in neutral or turn the switch off. the only time that i didn't use the lock up switch this year was on a track that broke half of the trucks that pulled. i was a little gun shy. the parts that i have seen break the most is pinions, spider gears, and u joints. if your lucky. got that set of 305's if you are interested. i know where a set of 285' are too. let me know something.
