sleeping in a CTD?

can i sleep in the extra cab of my 03 ctd while the truck is running wont kill me like a gasser right? why is this?

gasoline engine exhaust contains a large amount of carbon monoxide. that is what kills you. diesel engine exhaust contains carsonegenic compounds, but it won't kill you overnight.

Well, there's virtually no carbon monoxide in diesel exhaust, and that's the stuff from a gasser that would kill you.



I still wouldn't want to let my engine idle overnight, but if you're just talking catnaps, like maybe a half-hour or so, then it probably wouldn't be too hard on your engine.

A couple months ago I got called out to work EARLY on a Saturday morning, I had to leave the house at 3am. I showed up to do some work that was supposed to take 5 hours. Well, Sat. night came it was 100*F outside at 10pm. I had left my truck on all day to keep it cool (dehydrating and overheating is bad for your body) well, I was about 3 hours driving time away from the house, we post-poned work at 10:30pm, and had to be back to finish up at 6am. That would be 6 hours of driving, and 1. 5 hours sleeping. SO being 95* now at 11pm, I decided to stay and sleep in the truck,, 6 am rolled around, I got up and went back to work. Well, 12pm, Lunch sit in the A/C truck for 1 hour, eat, relax, and get some sleep. Back to work,, this is getting fun here comes 4pm, I can go home,, Yah, 3 hours of driving,, lets go. So I get home at 7pm,,



Lets count,, 6 hours driving. + 22 hours of idling.



You think what you want about that, but it's what I had to do.

I recommend a high idler kit. These engines are known to wet stack or wash down when idling. Someone posted a link to a tsb that said not to idle em for more than 15mins. Valve damage and wash down can and does occur. Not enough heat. I read of an ambulance wet stacking from idling for 30 mins to 1 hour at a time. At 1100 to 1200 rpm this condition is eliminated. The tsb was for 98 and 99 24v i dont know if it was corrected but I dont believe it likely that it was.



An old truck driver friend of mine had a 4 somin cummins in a big rig. He would have to idle it at 2300 rpms to get the heater to work up here in AK. Otherwise he would freeze in his sleeper. I said he shoulda installed a heated waterbed. He didnt think my suggestion was very good. Waterbeds are great for cold or hot weather. If its hot just shut off the heater. If its cold crank it up into the 90s. Good to go.

It looks like its a cold temperature thing. The gentleman that brought this to my attention works on the north slope. And they had some issues with the isb. My truck cools right down if I dont keep it moving. To the 140 degree range. So I dont leave it run too long.

As the ambient air temperatures have started to drop in out Northern Regions we are reminding the field, by this Thursday Note, on the ISB sticking valve / bent push tube issue. The 4 valve cylinder head on the ISB runs at a cooler temperature, which in some cases is allowing tar to condense on the exhaust valves. This may result in sticky valves and bent push tubes. The 2 valve head runs at a hotter temperature, thus preventing the tar build up. To reduce the risk, the following recommendations should be followed. This may be found in the PITs document "JJGN-44BKRU"



STICKING VALVES - SERVICE PLAN



Short Term:



Reactive short term: Repair and clean cylinder head as required.



Proactive short term: To prevent or decrease the risk of this occurring to an engine which frequently idles for long periods of time in arctic temperatures, Cummins recommends the following:



Use of a winter front on these trucks

Use of a block heater when the engine is idling.

If the truck is already equipped with an exhaust brake, it should be turned on during idle

Prior to shutting off the engine after extended idling (6 hrs) it is important to bring the engine to operating temperature (minimum of 140 degrees) to remove any carbon build up on the valves. This can be accomplished by driving the vehicle for 20-30 minutes or;

NON-Chrysler: Operate the engine at high idle for 5 minutes or until engine reaches 140°F.

Chrysler: Run the truck at 2000 rpm for two minutes, 3000 rpm for two minutes and then 3500 rpm for two minutes, until the engine reaches at least 140°F.

I remember back in 95(truck) one night I had a little too much beer and did not make it into the house. It was winter in the high 30s to low40. I pulled over not too far from the house and went to sleep. Truck idled for several hrs before I woke:--) and made it to the house and went to sleep. I went to town later that day and as I was getting on to the highway it looked like I was fogging for sketters. It cleared up after several miles.

Arrived on loacation with 1/4 tank. Filled up around noon (bribed an onsight re-fueler) arrived back at the house with 1/8 tank.



EGT stayed around 275* at night and 325* in the day.

I didn't/couldn't high idle (too noisy).

BTW HX-40/18 and DD5's (Drug Pushers). I had a real naasty oilly liquid bubbling out between my turbo and exhaust manifold. I've been told this is because of the big injectors, and operating the truck at idle. (Bad atomization)

Isn't that pretty much the rev limit on OTR engines?

DD5's:--) If anybody would get a dribble and cylinder wash down during extended idling it would be you. I love to just let my truck idle and i dont know why? I guess it is part of that diesel freak thing i got going on. I think this needs to be added you know you are a diesel addict when... ... .

that sounds about right for the top idle of an OTR diesel engine. some have lower [1800'ish] and some can be a little higher [2500'ish]

easy to idle like that, just toss a brick on the go pedal and sit back.

He didnt have anything good to say about the truck. HATED IT. He later got a 4 somin cat and it rocked his world. Said it was a dog for 100k then it came alive. He would smoke 600 series cummins. They fired him and tore the truck down to see what he did to it. He cussed em up and down saying they ruined the best motor hed ever seen. They were going to sue him but He did not tamper with it. It just ran good. It liked the cold. Some nights itd be 60-70 below hed be running the richardson highway. Says he could hear the injection pump hammering from inside the cab. Hed get out and pour some 2 cycle oil in the tank and it would quiet right down.





He just bought a cummins dually s/o and is in love. Im trying to talk him into joining the darkside. Him and his neighbor both bought and are on the low side of the mileage. Im trying to get both of em into some 275s and an EZ. They are good ol boys and wouldnt go any higher than that. One of em just lost his injection pump. Not a happy camper. Warranty picked it up. But he has lost some of his faith.
