I have a 1999 24 valve cummins, a friend has one just like mine. He is using slick 50 in his engine and rear axle. he has been telling me that i need to use slick 50 in mine also. I have not used slick 50 in anything so i do not have a good feel about this additive. I have always felt if used good oil you did not need additives. am i correct or is he. any information pro or con will be appreciated.

1999 2500 2x4, 24 valve cummins a/t Q. c. sle with all options except leather. fiberglass running boards, aluminum tool box, cb ham 2 meter really like my truck. much better than the chevy i had

Hi Wyatt
You might want to check the Slick50 bottle. The last one I saw said "not for use on Diesels". I have run oil analysis on oil with Slick50 and it shows up on the analysis. Don't remember what the results were but I like you think a good grade of 15W40 is all that is needed - I use Amsoil 15W40 and my current analysis (115,000 miles) looks just like my first one.

Slick 50 is a rip off!! If I can find the page with the info about this one and other oil additives I'll post it. It not only is worthless it may cause damage.

I think if you contact Cummins they will tell you DO NOT USE ANY ADDITIVE like that in your truck. Call them at 1-800-diesels. Your friend should do the same. A replacement engine is $10,000 not installed, and there could be some denile of warranty if they find that the slick 50 caused a problem. Use Shell Rotella, Delo 400 or whatever you want just make sure it has CG-4 SH CH-4 SJ and that is all you need to keep your engine purring for years.
Tell your friend to dump that oil and put in fresh and no additive.

I bought ban oldsmobile which had slick 50 in it. Owner swore by the stuff. He just ate a timing chain and I bought it cheap. When I iopened it, I found all the teflon settled into the valley, blocking oill drain holes. The hole that feeds the timing chain was completely blocked. I spent a week gouging out all of the teflon and cleaning up the engine, replacing timing gears and chains and pushrods (all bent). Car ran pretty good after that, but low on power. The slick 50 sediment problem had starved the camshaft of oil,a nd it was badly worn. I would NEVER, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use the stuff in anyhting of mine!

If you're going to run your engine without oil in it like they do on the comercials, go for it. Otherwise:
