Question regarding towing a Fifth Wheel

I want to get a pickup camper with two or more slides, having trouble finding just who makes or made them. Anybody got one or has done some research on them?

Double Sliode Truck Campers

Okanagan builds one under their name and they also own Eagle Cap, the rear of the camper slides back for the second slide. Host has a double and a triple slide-out, but I'd look at something larger than a 3500 for a triple slide.

On mine, I have a driver's side slide-out, then the rear folds down and makes a tent. My son sleeps in the tent part, that way you aren't taking the table up and down.

You can go to NATCOA (North American Truck Camper Owners Assn) and read about some.

I own a 2003 Lance 11' 6" camper with a slide out that I bought new in early 2003 and has been hauled over 30,000 miles and had no problems with it. The slide out section has been run out and in hundreds if not a thousand times both on and off the truck. No problems with water or air leaks around the slide out unit open or closed either.

As usual, you guys are a wealth of information! Thanks to all.

That triple slide Host sure looks sweet to me, and the weight is not all that bad either.

I would appreciate any comments from people that actually own a double or triple slide unit.

yep. I got a lance and so far it's working out pretty nice it has 1 slide out look at the 1181 model the drivers side from the back of the cab to back corner slides out. going to Virginia in may and Seattle in the summer

Don, if you get an 11' 6" camper with two slide outs, you will need to get a larger truck. like a 4500 or a 5500. According to RV Consumer Guide, the 11' 3" Lance camper I had required an F450 or a Dodge 4500. My 3500 DRW, however handled the camper very well, but my camper didn't have a slide out.

Interesting, that is the make and model that has impressed me for my use the most also. Have you done a weigh-in with it? What year is it? I had never even heard of a Host before.

Grizzly, I have been concerned about weight as well, never knew of the facts you presented. I have however so far found that there seems to be a large weight difference in like models, Lance seems to be the heaviest! I guess I would be pretty unhappy if I overdid the weight, but my CTD seems to not know any limits! Looking at floor plans, I notice that one BIG slide makes more sense than three itsy bitsy ones that only slide a couple of inches. I guess getting the most aluminum in it possible is a good thing. A Lance I was considering, the owner said it weighed 4900 lbs, he was hauling it around on a Dodge 3500, wondered if that was the reason he was selling it.

Good Heavens, even a magazine! That was a very helpful to me review. I am thinking I don't really need or want the triple, one or two will be plenty for my use. Sleeping for two maximum is my needs. I cannot recall the weight of my old Skyline 12ft job I carried on my truck, but it had NO aluminum and was HEAVY! Truck did not seem to mind though, had to keep some air in the air bags to make it ride nice. .

You might also look at Snowriver Super Slide-out Camper. They are pricey, but arguably the best built TC. The owner and President of the company has been known to drive personally to his owners (whom he considers family) to fix concerns on his product. I wish I could afford one! They produce fewer, higher quality truck campers when compared to mass produced units.

I have met Bob... . hell of a nice guy too!

I've heard the same thing before about Snowbird/Snowriver, though you don't see a lot of them.

There are lots of truck campers around here. You usually see them heading off into the mountains with either a fishing boat or dirt bike/quads behind.

Within a 60 mile drive of my house are the manufacturing plants of Bigfoot, Citation, Northern Lite, Okanagan and Snowriver/Snowbird. They all seem well built to me, especially when compared to my budget 5th wheel.

Bigfoot seem to be the most popular. I've been in a couple of Northern Lites that really impressed me but they don't make a slide.

Like some others they are made in Canada. I drove to TN from Indianapolis last yeat to look at a few. I couldn't get my fat gut comfortably behind their oval table, otherwise I might have bought one.

I don't know about these slides... . I see them going down the highway all leaning to one side like the truck has a broken spring. And it looks to me like if you stop for the wife to pee you can't get into the bathroom without leveling up and putting the slide out.

A buddy of mine can't get into his refrigerator on his 5th wheel without first running the slide out... . What a pain in the butt.

My truck camper has been a good one and is 11 years old now. We use it to travel and it paid for itself in 8 years of motel and meal savings, while giving my wife her own toilet to pee in... . what a pain in the asse a slide would have been.

I am looking now for a 5th wheel for camping but will keep the TC for just plain trips.

I want two slides on the 5th but it has to have a middle kitchen so I can noon without putting the slide out.
