Until I can afford a trans upgrade I would like to try moving my stock plate foreward and a 3k GSK "as recommended by Round Table members. . Thanks" will I need to Increase boost to make up for more fuel? if so How, Do i buy an boost control elbow or restrict the stock one. also can anyone tell me why I decided to have kids?? this diesel thing gets expensive and there taking all my money:D

Regards,

Mike

How much more power will sliding the stock plate make in a 215 pump vs. the auto pump? Also when sliding the stock plate should the AFC be moved forward or left alone to control smoke?

Doug

on my 96 i just slid my stock plate and afc all the way forward..... Big improvement over stock. Not too much smoke. At a stop sign if you just floor it there will be a little cloud left behind, just enough to make it semi-pleasurable. While rolling along at about 43 mph in OD and Lock-up, if i put the go pedal 3/4 of the way to floor, i can make some pretty good smoke, but i have to lug the hell out of the engine.

Over all not enough smoke to worry about playing with the afc, but a big increase in power.

Great! thank you, how much boost "if Any" do you think I should use with the stock plate all the way foreward and 3K GSK. and do I really need the 3K GSK??

Tks,

Mike

with a '97 you probably don't "need" a GSK at this point, but it'll make a nice difference and you'll eventually be adding it later ;)

if you wanna have some fun, grind that plate flat and use it as a rack stop

Forrest

thanks for the input, I don't trust myself to grind anything, what does griding it flat do? twist the trans into a dimension of no return:eek: if you move the stock plate forward do you need to turn up the boost? help me I'm lost in Diesel confusion!

Thanks Y'all.

Mike

uber ram, i have the same questions as you do. Here is what I think, when more fuel is added more boost is generated at the top end. driving normally ( how you did before the plate was moved ) i believe that you will see the same boost and egt numbers. when you go WOT that is when the boost will go higher to help burn all of the fuel. adjusting the wastegate or plugging the line will allow the boost to go higher. I dont know what your wastegate is set at but i can achieve 24 lbs of boost consistantly with a stock truck. this weekend i hope to have time to move the stock plate forward so I will let you know if the boost changes. I am also curious about how much horsepower sliding the stock plate creates.

Doug

The wastegate is set higher on a 5spd truck. Approx. 18 auto, 24 manual.

uber ram, I would think that 22-25# would be more than enough. You'll know by watching the pyro.

you really cant turn up boost it is just a product of more fuel and more air. i would strongly recomend for now just slide the plate get a boost control elbow, and definately a 3 gsk you will be alot happier with the truck

thanks Ya'll,

WOT I hit 20Lbs solid, like you say that should do fine

Doug, let me know how it doe's when you slide your plate foreward. I would like to do mine soon, Curious to see what happens.

Mike,

I slid the plate all of the way forward and moved the AFC housing all of the way forward as well has the starwheel. The max boost I see is still 24 lbs because that is where the wastegate is set at. Which is the same as I saw stock. My max EGT is 1100 deg. unloaded. I do not know what it will be with a trailer. Cruising boost and egt are still about the same 5 - 8 lbs and 600 to 800 deg depend on wind at 70 mph.

Doug

Doug,

Thats good!! did it give you a more seat of the pants feel

as far as power goes?

biggy238,

Piers Diesel or TST carries the boost Elbow, Dont know how to make one couldnt be to hard.

Mike

Yes it did give you a nice push into the seat compared to stock. Jim Filmer said that he dynoed a stock 97 5 spd and the with the plate slid forward and a boost elbow and it made 170 stock and I believe 240 or 250 with the plate slid.

Once I broke the break off screw off after removing the intake it took about 5 minutes. Remeber to mark where the plate is stock before you slide it.

No I did not replace it because I broke it off in the pump by mistake. So I am only running with 3 screws which seems to be

OK, io don't have any leaks so far.
