As the topic states, for the last couple hundred miles or so, it seems that if I rev past 2000 rpm's in 2nd gear and shift into 3rd with the clutch fully depressed, I can feel a slight grinding through the stick, although I can not actually hear the grinding noise. And if I don’t rev past 2000 rpm's it shifts normally.

It almost seems to me that the 3rd gear syncro not working correctly above 2k rpm's? Any thoughts, opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance:confused:

My six speed feels a little "notchy"(for lack of a better word) going into third. Almost like it is going to grind but doesn't quite get there. Now that the truck has about 5k on, the feeling is significantly diminished.

I have read several posts where it was indicated that changing the transmission fluid, even to OE, resulted in smoother shifting. I plan on doing this in another 5k or so.

I am also thinking of getting a short shifter but I am unsure if this would magnify any shifting problems.

Common problem on pre-'03 6 speeds - mine would display a SLIGHT "catch" going into 3rd when new - not quite a grind, and mostly if I shifted a bit too quickly and lube not warmed up...

I now have 23,000 miles on it, and that is gone, even when cold...

Just shift a bit slower, give the syncros a chance to do their thing, and hopefully once they get seated maybe the problem will go away as mine did.

My 2001 six speed did the exact same thing. After about five thousand miles, it became very smooth. Great transmission.

thanks for the feed back.

I have 6600 miles on my truck now and this started around 6400 ish miles..... I guess I wll monitor it to see what happens.

Note: It has been pretty cold around here lately, highs in the teens etc. although it seems to do it when the fluid is cold and upto Operating temp..... just not as bad.

I also must admit that I like to excute a nice quick firm shift vs just letting it coast into gear... ... I like trying to keep RPM's up vs losing boost etc. (no I am not driving like I rented it... ... just driving it like I stole it ;) Guess I need to take it easy) (last quote came from another recent post in the TDR... giving credit where credit is due)

Mine only does it the first time I go for 3rd when the trans is cold. I've found that double clutching it that first time stops it from happening.

okay... ... really dumb question ahead.....

I have heard the term before, but I am not exactly sure what "double clutching" means or does other then I believe it is used in semi's regularly

(which I have never driven or even rode in for that matter)

depress clutch, go into neutral, release clutch for a moment and depress again, now find gear. i have to do that with 2nd sometimes when the transmission is cold and i am slightly rolling [there is a downhill stopsign by my home and it will grind if the transmission is cold and i try to force it, so i'll double clutch it to get it in. ]

When cold mine will 'catch' or be 'notchy'. Once warm generallly not a problem, occasionally though it is. I have noticed if I get into nuetral and hit the RxR tracks at the time of shift I grinded twice. The bumps did something to the synchros. Now I look what is ahead road wise.

If you wait a second just before going into 3rd you will fell a slight bump in the stick. I will wait until I feel that bump and then push it into third and she goes in real smooth. It will take a second or two.

I think I fixed the problem... .

I was driving home from work and the truck had been doing the slight grinding thing..... so to avoid it, coming off a light near my work I wound 2nd to like 2500 RPM ish and then shifted to 4th with no problem (aka power shift) at the next light I shifted into 3rd from 2nd just over 2k rpm and it went smooth as silk.....

I wonder if I fixed something by skipping a gear? I will continue monitoring to see what happens with it.

You may want to check TSB 21-009-01. It states that it applies to pre 3-17-01 build dates, but my partner had his countershaft replaced on his '03 and it solved his problems. May be worth a try for you as well.

Good luck.
