My '91. 5 Cummins is starting to slow up really bad on the hills while the engine speed doesn't drop. What brands of torque converters have some of you fellas used and what kind of performance increase have you gotten. Please let me know where you purchased them also. Thanks

You are most likely experiencing transmission wear, not TC slipping. Basically they are just inefficient TC's. The stall speed on them is too high, and when the transmission starts to wear down, they feel like they are slipping because you need more throttle to keep em rolling or get them rolling.

I have only used the DTT Convertor, and to be honest I wouldn't look any further than that. I have been very pleased with the performance and would do it again tomorrow if need be.

They offer a number of options depending on your driving needs, and HP goals.

I guess it depends on how much horsepower/torque etc. I did'nt want to spend mega bucks on a tc and used one from TCI which has a web page etc. Paid around 345. 00 for a TCI towing/rc convertor. It droped stall speed way down, droped trans temp by about 20degrees and rpms at hiway speeds dropped 200

Probably 5 years or so now I put a Suncoast convertor in my 92 4x4 and it made a bigger difference (SOTP power) then the banks power pack that I had put on. I loved it

I feel your pain...

WStrong,

I feel your pain - I have the same ailment in my 93 - check out a post I did a short while ago, 'Sloppy converter in 93 auto' - TONS of good info - this site is the primo place for these questions.

My truck seems to just lose it's speed, but the engine revs its heart out - sound about right? I haven't got it yet, but a DTT 89% converter is on my Christmas list, along with a host of gauges.

The converter is about $750, and that's not too bad considering the power potential in these engines. Where I'm going I want the best out there, and it looks like the DTT is the good stuff. My two cents worth. Good luck!

Anyone else out this way that wants to do some tours??

You should also check out ATS, in Denver. I had my '95 done there, I got the complete ATS rebuild, and it is the BEST THING I have ever done to my truck.

That TrepleLok just will NOT slip, I don't care how much H. P. & Torque you develop.

I can't say enough good things about Don, Clint & Ranee. They let me follow my trans all around the shop as it was being torn down and re-built, they let me work on my truck while it was on one of their lifts for a day, and they gave me a car to take to lunch, run errands with, etc. Fed me pizza too.

Here is the thread I posted back in April. Since then I've put 15,000 city miles on the trans and it is GREAT! Shifting locked is neat, but I don't do it very much.

WStrong,

You've gotten some good references for transmission/tc options. Talk to users, make some calls, take some rides if you can. Then, find what works for you.

FWIW, Robert, just to clarify (not to kick sand) for those new 1st Genners who may not know, our trucks do not use a lock-up TC, it's all fluid coupling. A lock-up system can be transplanted but it requires some extensive/troublesome electronics and more $$$ to do, but it can be done.

TCi converter

DPK, I'm looking to give my auto a decent non-magabuck fix, and I need your thoughts about your TCI converter. I got their info on a unit # 142250 for about $350 from Summit. If I was going to keep the auto I'd go full tilt DTT, but I decided to go to a NV 4500, but that will be a while from now, so I'm looking for a read on the TCI unit.

Is the one you have the same one they told me about, and do you like it, etc?

Many thanks,

- Sam

When I bought mine my flex plate shattered in another state. Did'nt really know about TDR and found a old issue. Called a few trans ads and at the time about fell over at $600 plus torque convertors. Had a jegs catalog and ordered the Tci unit. Had it dropped shipped. Made a big differance over stock. Stall speed a lot lower, truck almost more then creeped along at idle in drive. Before would'nt move, towed better in the since it maintained the pull speed easier. Was told about a 200 rpm differance hiway speeds,it feels like it is. Two trips out west one with old convertor towing 9600lbs and one with new(same weight etc. )was about a 1 mile plus differance in fuel mileage. Wife noticed differance in performance and she kept track of mileage. Now with new injectors it really romps. Made the other Banks stuff come alive. Keep hunting strokes and 03 Tc at red lights to see. Havent been able to egg one one yet.
