Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Sloppy 2 - 3 shift - light throttle/low speed

122k. During light throttle @ low speeds (10 - 20) when shifting from 2nd to 3rd there's an rpm increase, not a great deal just enough to hear. Under usual throttle it's fine.



ATF+3 is cherry red and changed approximately 15k ago and 30k prior. I've owned since 75 and upon purchase dumped and refilled all fluids . . . std practice of mine when buying used. I did the band adjustment time before last ATF change but, not last time.



Rarely run hard, never put away wet. Think a band adjustment is in order? I'm saving for a real trans, then the VP and then, and then, and then . . . Bombs drop.

Yes, check the front band adjustment. It is out of adjustment.

Yes it sounds like the 2nd gear band is slipping. Needs to lock down and stop cylinder from turning for 3rd gear to engage.

Bill, just a correction, The front band need to clamp down on the drum for 2nd gear. The band is relaxed for third. The trans will skip 2nd if you rev it enough then lift the throttle at the shift from first.
