I have a '99 24 valve 4x4 short bed (125,000) with noticeable slop in the drive train. Clunks when I put is in gear and clunks when I let off the gas. U-joints are good. Transmission is a DTT in good shape. Rear end is tight. Problem goes away when I shift to 4x4. The only thing left, I far as I can tell is the transfer case. Anyone have any ideas? Anyway to confirm transfer case?

Spring wrap?

Check your rear spring bushings and perches?

Short bed?

Do you have 2 rear driveshafts?

If yes? check the driveshaft carrier bearing.

Check the splines between the shafts too. If it's the T-case, it would be wear between what's connecting the input and output shafts. I don't remember the arrangement, it's been a while since I've been inside one.
