I can turn the steering wheel and shaft back and forth about 2 inches without the wheels moving. Is this normal for the shaft to move this much with no movement from the box or does the steering box need to be rebuilt/replaced?

Alot of these trucks have some slop in the steering system. The box can be snugged up some at the input side, If you do a search I'm sure you can find this (might even be on Geno's website). It involves disconnecting the steering shaft then loosening off the big flat (thin) lock nut and then turning in the center part and backing off a few mm. The over center allen set screw can also be tightened a tad. Hope this helps, Cheers

I have done the overcentre adjustment. Haven't tightened the bearing. Is the spanner wrench required or has someone got a home made solution for that?

You can use a couple of screw drivers and a hammer. Mine was completely rusted tight and the loc nut and preload nut came off together. One of the problems with this box is that there is no seal at this end to prevent water from getting in. (at least on Mine) The first pic is the loc nut / preload nut off the unit rusted together. The next one is looking down into the steering box.

I got about the same amount of slop in my steering wheel so I am installing a new power steering gear box(got a heck of a deal on it) and a gear box reinforcement bar from Piers. I have all ready gone through the rest of the front suspension so that is whats left. I also am going to replace the steering stabilizer shock (mines bent up from off road hits) and flush the entire system and refill with Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid (to kill the growl). This I hope will make the old truck drive like new if not better !

Crewcab

I am interested in the results. Everything else on mine has been replaced too. Also has the DSS steering stabilizer.

AGR

I have an AGR steering box that I put on about a year and a half ago and I would not buy another one. It is actually the third one that I had put on, the first two were sent back for as much or more play than the original box that I took off... I am sure some have had a measure of luck with them, but I haven't.

I installed an AGR box and it is crap. Very loose and tremendous dead pard steer going left. Getting ready to get factory unit resealed and put it back
