The old girl wanders on the road. Seems like a lot of play in the steering. I've checked everything and it seems the only play is in the gear box where the steering shaft enters. Are these gear boxes known for play? Do they go bad? I don't believe it to be the ball joints or drag link. I know there have been discussions in the past about this and I'm going to research those as well. Anybody got any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks in advance...

Just some advice, if you have not replaced your steering shaft with an aftermarket one like borgeson or flaming river's models, that may be it.

My 1-ton dump has had a front end that just refused to be aligned, and always seemed a bit difficult to keep inbetween the lines. I just replaced that shaft with the borgeson, and can say that 98% of my problems are gone.

Check the flex joint carefully where it enters the steering box. Have some one turn the wheel while the truck is not running, and watch the movement of the shaft in relation to the bigger part (flex joint) that connects to the steering box. If these two parts do not move 1:1, wandering begins there.
