2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Slot in bottom of bell housing.

Can anybody tell me what the purpose is of the open slot at the bottom of the bell housing where it mates up to the back of the engine? You can see the gear teeth on the edge of the flywheel through it.

I take it you are talking about the cover on the bottom of bell housing. Or the missing cover. Used to access flexplate to converter bolts, drain converter if you have aftermarket converter.

oops just noticed manual trans. Ok ok so you need to get to the pressure plate bolts and inspect throw out bearing and anything else in there you may want to inspect with out pulling the trans. Picky picky :)

Dave is right, you will see it on almost every automatic. It is how you access the flex plate to converter bolts. There is usually a rubber cap/boot that plugs the hole though.

You guys crack me up :) I wondered how many would miss the manual trans in my sig before posting an answer. I'm guilty of that, too!



Doesn't seem like much of an inspection slot for the fly wheel. I mean, you really can only see the gear teeth the starter engages.



The reason I ask is that I put in a dual disk clutch a few weeks ago and it makes a pretty good rattle when disengaged at a stop light or stop sign. So I wrapped the bell housing in sound deadener but that didn't help much at all. So after thinking about it, yesterday I put a double flap of sound deadening rubber over the slot. That made a big impact. You can still hear the rattle, but its not nearly as bad. The flap will still allow moisture drip out, if that occurs. But that can be done with just a small hole. I was wondering if it had another purpose due to its size.

Because of its size and shape it could have another use but we cannot post it here :D . Use your imagination.

Ventilation for cooling and clutch dust removal. Further up the bellhousing is another vent. Convection will draw heat out through the top vent. Oil from a leaky rear main seal can drain out of the bottom as well.
