Alrighty, guys,

I'm considering buying a cheap 12V to play with, and I found a potential candidate. It's a '94 auto 2wd. Went and test drove it today, and it seemed to be in pretty good condition mechanically. Pump seems unmolested. Brakes good. Interior okay. Rough exterior. Problem is it's been forever since I drove a 160hp Cummins, and I've never driven a stock slushbox before, so I had a couple questions:

1. How sloppy are the autos with stock tc and stock vb? *Supposedly* the trans was rebuilt within the last two years (stock rebuild), but the documentation was lost :). This truck seemed pretty sloppy on 1-2 and 2-3. 3-4 was a little firmer, and it didn't seem to be slipping under WOT at all.

2. What's a normal, say, 0-60 time on a 160 auto? Maybe it's just because it's been awhile since I drove a stock truck, but man did this truck seem slow. It seemed to run fine other than that, though, so I really think maybe my butt-o-meter calibration is just off a bit.

Thanks.

Chris

i belive the stock 0-60 on a 180pump auto is 15seconds. i wouldnt imaging a 160 pump would be conciderably slower. thats whats on the dealer sheet i have when the truck had the trannie inspected a couple years ago. mine was in "spec" at 15. 8second 0-60mph. those were the slow days lol :-laf

My 95 auto was a dog when I got it. I had a stock 90 5sp that would run circles around it, and supposedly rated at the same hp.

My '98 auto was a dog too, so I can imagine a '94 being really weak. The '98 is still stock, except I threw in a set of 300 injectors which helped a bunch.

Funny how that's about half a second longer than it takes for my truck to reach 106MPH... .

mine now does the 1/4 in 15sec. its come a long way but definetly not far enough to be happy with it. i need more air :-laf

When I bought my 1990 (years ago), it had been sitting for the better part of 2 years. It was a dog, but it ran better after a couple tanks went thru it.

My 1995 was the same way, except the transmission seemed unhappy. It had a hard time shifting gears, like it was really limp. Got home and added 2 quarts of transmission fluid and it worked much better!

Yes, the old 160 hp engines are not fast. They weren't built for that, they were built for reliable, and this was the days before computer controlled injectors, so they had to give them little injectors to make them EPA compliant. Not only that, the Auto transmissions were kind of weak from the factory, mainly torque converter issues.

Get some more air to flow thru it (exhaust, and intake), and get some better injectors in there, as well as a fuel stop plate. It will surprise you how much it wakes up. Won't outrun a new one, but it will do just fine for running around and having a little fun.
